Living la vida loca diabetes style...

I went in to the doctor on Monday and was diagnosed as soon as the doctor walked in the door. The good news is that my liver is not that far out of range, my vitimin D levels are being treated medically, and I caught the diabetes early enough that I have not caused any major damage to various organs. They don't have me on any new meds other than a baby aspirin a day. The prescription for the diabetes? Check my blood sugars daily, exercise and lose weight.

Since I started monitoring my carb intake (while still enjoying healhy for me "good" carbs in the form of whole grains and a wide variety of veggies and lean meats) I have dropped 4 lbs, gotten some of my energy back and sorry for the TMI here, but slept through the night for the first time in two years without having to get up and go pee one or two times. I had to check the clock twice when I woke up to my alarm to make sure that it was right. *lol* This weekend I will be getting back to the gym as well.

The toughest thing has been regularly pricking my fingers. I am having a hard time getting enough blood out, and as a result my poor fingers feel like hamburger meat. :( But as I told my doctor... just tell me what I have to do and I will do it. There are no other alternatives for me. And I am *motivated.*

My strategy is fairly simple, I am attacking this whole diabetes thing with the same hard work and concentration that I put into turning myself from a D & F student to someone who is working towards her master's degree. If I can do that, I can do anything that i put my mind to.

Don't get me wrong, this past week and half has been one of the toughest in my life. I have had lots of down moments, and I am very angry with myself (and coming to terms with that) for allowing me to get into this mess to begin with. It should not have taken something so life-alteringly bad to get me to see the light.

I find life to be funny at times. I mean how wierd is it that being handed down one of the scariest diagnoses ever may have just turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to me?

So far my carbs have been managed pretty well. In the two and a half days that i have been monitoring, my range has stayed in a respectable 120-125 range. I did have a pretty big spike to 208 yesterday morning, but I added a snack right before bed, and it equalized my blood glucose enough to allow me to be a healthier 137 after breakfast today.
