THIS is why I need a new icon set...

...because I have no icon of extreme glee! ^^ Apart from the fact that I think I may have helped an LJ friend cheer up when she needed it (thank you, Lord, for the inspiration!), I've just finished watching "Nothing," another David Hewlett movie provided by the wonderfully insane Charlene, who deals me all my DVD crack (in retaliation for the SGA addiction I foisted on her!).

And crack, indeed, it is!! This is one unholy piece of comic fantasy from beginning to end. If you need (for some reason) a plot to make sense, or have any type of realism, just pass this one by. And yet, there is a whole heck of a lot of painful truth in it....

I'm not interested in the type of movies that mock the lowly (the stupid, the vapid, the ineffectual, and the socially inept), so it's possible that this film isn't as unique as it seems to me, but Nothing transcends mockery. This is a truly funny movie about how truly hurtful and horrific people can make each other's lives. And it really doesn't end well for the characters at all...except for how it ends perfectly!! I feel like a bit of a sicko, actually, but the last scene (and the closing credits! The CREDITS!!!) left me grinning ear-to-ear and giggling helplessly. For, like, an hour. ^^

So, um...yeah. How's that for a completely unspoilery review? Cryptic enough?? *eyeroll* But...well, it's the kind of thing you just need to watch in order to appreciate. HOWEVER, be warned: I, personally, wouldn't want my teenagers to see it, due to direct references to a certain sexual act best left unmentioned. Also, quite a bit of profanity, much of it unChristian. So, viewer discretion, please!

Oh, and another word of caution: IMDb has a trailer on its Nothing page, and Wikipedia has a completely spoiling plot summary: both are poor representations of the movie. It's really not nearly as grim to watch as everyone (including me, perhaps?) seems to make it out to be!
