If your child wants to read a book that is not on the summer reading list or earns Accelerated Reader points, don't automatically say no. If there is something about a book that has captured your child's attention, you should be happy about that. Make a deal: He finishes the summer reading/AR book, he gets to read the other one. But don't discount a book because it's not on some list, especially if it has excited your child. It might make the difference between her having to read and wanting to read.
