Kuala Lumpur, Jan. 13: Unidentified persons hurled stones at a gurdwara here damaging a front window of the building, adding to religious tensions over a series of attacks on churches in this Muslim-majority country.
The police on Wednesday termed the incident as the handiwork of “naughty youngsters” and said that they are looking into the matter.
Several volunteers were inside the gurdwara when stones were thrown at around 6.45 pm, they said, adding no one was hurt in the incident.
A near by Telecom building was too pelted with stones, they said. Several volunteers inside the gurdwara heard some noise and went out to check but they found no one, gurdwara president, Mr Gurdial Singh, was quoted as saying by the local daily New Strait Times.
It is fortunate that no one was hurt. This incident only shows how fragile religious acceptance is. Hostility among Muslims over the use of the word 'Allah' as a translation for god by Christians caused churches in Malaysia to be attacked. This outrage was caused only because there is little understanding and tolerance between the different religions. If everyone were to adopt a peaceful mindset where violence is shunned as a way out of problems, peaceful co-existence will no longer be a dream, but a reality. Once the seed of mistrust is planted, it can never be completely uprooted. There will always be those who desire unrest and support brutality.
All i aim to achieve through this post is that the people who stoned the gurdwara be identified and that the police do not take this matter lightly. It is not right to just dismiss such a sensitive issue by claiming it was done out of mischief without any hard evidence to back up that statement. The Sikhs had no part in this issue, yet they were attacked. Those who attacked the gurdwara, fire-bombed and vandalized churches are part of the minority of people who corrupt our peace and have no desire of co-existence.
