fannish stuff

ganked from taraljc:

1. What fandom did you get into that you were absolivity and posiloutly sure, you were never going to get into, but you did.

I've got two answers for this meme, so here we go:

Firefly: Sure, I was excited about it -- Joss Whedon's new show, debuting as BtVS was wrapping up. I didn't expect to fall head-over-heels in love, though.

The O.C.: Why would I want to watch some soapy show about kids in Orange County? It didn't look funny; it looked as if all these rich kids did was whine about their horrible lives. (How wrong was I!)

2. What made you think you would never get into it? What tipped you into it?

Firefly: After I saw "The Train Job" (the first episode FOX aired), I thought Great, Joss has gone and screwed up this moderately cute idea. I think the only memorable things from that episode (for me) were Jayne falling unconscious, shooting the guy in the head (but aiming for the leg), and Mal and Zoe's "Right, Sir. Honey." talk. The funny thing is that I decided that I would watch Firefly only because there was nothing better on, and because John Doe (which also got cancelled) was on after. I wasn't very amused by "Bushwhacked" and unfortunately missed "Our Mrs. Reynolds" because of baseball. It wasn't until "Jaynestown" that I started really getting into the show. By "Ariel" I was hooked, and I was devastated when, the morning after I watched "Objects in Space," I discovered that my new favorite TV show was cancelled. Thank God the DVDs are coming out in half a month!

The O.C.: When I first saw the ads for this show, it looked humorless. Then I discovered that Adam Brody, whom I had loved in Gilmore Girls, and some cutie named Benjamin McKenzie were in it, and I decided to give it a try. Even then I didn't immediately love it -- plus, my friend made me watch the pilot 1 1/2 times, after I'd watched it once before. A couple of episodes later, I had developed a crush on Ben, I cracked up at Seth's geekiness, and I couldn't imagine not watching this fantastic laughfest. I bet the first season will be on DVD as soon as FOX can manage it. (That's what they did with 24.)

3. Did you start to write/vid/archive/dub/(fill in fannish creative activity) in that fandom? Do you still?

Firefly: Before Firefly, I'd been writing fanfiction for nearly two years, in other fandoms like Tamora Pierce's books and the CGI-cartoon ReBoot. I started writing fanfiction for FF around when "Ariel" aired. My first fanfic for this fandom, in fact, was based on the events of that episode. Since then, I've written thirty-something drabbles (at ff_friday) and other short fanfics, but at the moment I'm not. In fact, I'm pretty much finished with fanfic writing as a whole.

The O.C.: God, no. I couldn't begin to tackle the jokes, and I'm afraid it would sound way too soapy. Plus, as I mentioned above, I'm not writing fanfiction anymore.

4. Have you ever pimped someone into a fandom without trying? Which fandom, and what did it?

I got my girlfriends into The O.C. -- the male leads did it, I think -- but no one was very averse to the idea of space cowboys. *heavy sigh* I've also introduced some friends to Tamora Pierce's books. Speaking of, head for tortall or go here or here. :)

5. Do you have a fandom where you do not read the fic? Why not?

Actually, I don't usually read fanfic for The O.C., except for the one or two character pieces about Anna. For some reason, it doesn't have the same appeal as the Firefly fanfic does. Also, I don't read a lot of BtVS/AtS fanfiction, if you don't include drabbles (like at open_on_sunday).
