Marutama Ramen

My friends and I stopped by Marutama Ramen for lunch sometime this Raya holidays.

The only way I know which of these is whose is from seeing who's in the background, they look very much alike!

However, the big difference is this: This bowl is rh11's, and is super spicy. IRL, the soup's the exact same colour as the bowl below (a bit hard to see because there's liao in the way)

This is blackwing_dias'. It's the same soup but without spicyness. The soup tastes pretty good.

And this is mine, the "aka" ramen (ie, red ramen). The red colouring is entirely due to the peanut oil base, this thing is not even spicy at all.

I gottta say, the first taste of it was kinda unexpected, I was expecting some meat-based taste, but it's a very unfamilliar taste, I'm actually not sure how to describe it. By the end of the meal though, I love love love the taste and finished off all the soup XD; Ditto the meatballs, it's a bit odd but nice.

I have to warn you that I like very odd things though, so if you want to be safe, better stick with the yellow soup, it's still good and is more normal (I think it's chicken? XD)

The highlight is probably the charsiu -- the big round pieces you can see sticking out the sides of the bowl, and it's laid out flat in blackwing_dias' bowl. The meat almost melts in your mouth!

This thing (Charsiu Gohan/Charsiu Rice) is only RM8, compared to the rest of the menu, but it is TINY. I'll need two bowls of it. Big eaters might need 3 or 6 ^^; There's like a fistful of rice in it.

However, it is DELICIOUS. Really, there's no other description. 3 of us had ramen, and the one who didn't said the ramen's char siu was kinda "okay only", I guess compared to the meat in the rice the ramen's char siu becomes less impressive ^^;

You can "tambah"/top up noodles at RM3, the portion of one of these is the same as your original bowl. However, you CANNOT top up soup, only noodles.

So if you're on a budget, you can round up a friend to share a bowl and still have a full meal (just don't drink all the soup too fast, because you can only top up noodles, not soup)
(This will never work for me, because I like the soup alot ^^;)

And this... is salt. When you add extra noodles to your soup sometimes you feel like the noodles aren't "tasty" anymore because it's the second round, you can add this. Use it sparingly though, it's very salty XD

Noodles aren't the only thing you can top up, you can also buy extra "liao" like char siu, eggs, seaweed, etc.

A special note about the eggs, between us we had at least three boiled eggs (two with the noodles, and the one in the pic above was an extra order) -- the egg yolks are all consistently runny, so be aware if you're one of those that dislikes runny yolks. Personally I love runny eggs, so I'm totally okay with this XD;

Summary
Location: Fahrenheit 88, Bukit Bintang, KL (Lot Flr. 27.01, 1st floor)
Halal? NO
Price range: RM20-ish for a bowl of noodles, you can add noodles for RM3
I want to eat: Aka ramen, Char Siu Gohan. I will not share my bowl of soup, k? XD Although I'd trade some of it for some of the char siu rice.
I don't want to eat: Rice, gyoza, anything that doesn't have the charsiu in it is probably not quite worth it XD;

Chatterbox

Chatterbox is a fusion chinese food place. We stopped by here for brunch last Friday.

I got one of the lunch sets which comes with the above soup as well as the bee hoon below (and a glass of yin-yong). I think the soup's a tad watery, but it's still pretty good.

Singapore Noodles. These are the type done with curry powder instead of tomato sauce. I LOVE IT -- but I'm biased, I love this style of Singapore bee hoon, as long as it's actually dry.

These are my friends' meals:

One of these is chicken and the other is pork cheese rice, both with red sauce. I got a taste of the chicken one, and yes, it is good.

Dessert: pumpkin paste. It arrives white with the pumpkin paste at the bottom of the bowl, you need to mix it to get the taste mixed.

What I like is that it's not too sweet, feels like the cook didn't go overboard with white sugar. Oh, and the sago bits and grass jelly add a lovely texture to the sludge as well.
