Glad He Just Drank His Guinness and Didn't Accidentally Shoot Us

Before I tell you about the trip, let me tell you how our day began. We woke up at 4:30 A.M. to the absence of sound from the air conditioning. The power was out. Yuck. Our bedroom is in the attic, and it gets unbearably hot up there in the summer without air. We went downstairs to crash on the couch, but, of course, neither of us got much sleep after that. We finally got up at 6:30, and the power came back on about 15 minutes later. I was glad because our air doesn't automatically come back on when the power comes back on, and I wasn't about to leave for 3 days without having the air on for the animals since the heat index was supposed to be over 100 today. We got out of the house at about 8 and had some breakfast, then got out on the road. Incidentally, on our way to breakfast, we saw the pole that someone hit to knock our power out.

The drive was uneventful. It took us about 4 hours. We hit some traffic as we came in to NYC; no surprises there. We got the car parked and headed into the hotel. Our room wasn't ready yet, so they held our luggage and we took a walk. What a great location! We're on 49th St. right off Broadway. We had lunch at the Broadway Deli (reuben sandwiches), then walked down to Times Square. It was hot, but not unbearably so. Apparently, we missed all the excitement. There was a huge storm here this morning, including a tornado. All the subways were flooded and closed. Crazy. Anyway, we were getting hot and still had 1/2 hour before the room was ready, so we decided to duck into a bar and have a drink. We saw an Irish pub, and decided to go in. We ordered a couple of Guinnesses. Our bartender was Irish, and Junior Soprano was sitting at the other end of the bar. Very cool. Not in the city 2 hours and we see a celebrity. The bartender told us he likes to sing Irish songs. We finished our drinks, cooled off, then headed back to the hotel. On our way we spotted the naked cowboy.

We got checked in, and went up to our room. The first thing Bob noticed was that the shower didn't look clean. Then, he looked up and noticed the shower head was missing. I said, "There it is in the soap dish." Then he noticed the big wad of gum on the shower floor. Needless to say, we were quickly back down at the desk. They switched our room, and this one was fine. We vegged in the room for a little while, then took a nighttime bus tour of the city. It was really nice. It wasn't too hot, and it was really cool seeing the city by night. We even went over to Brooklyn so we could see the city skyline, and all the bridges were lit up, which was cool.

After the tour, we changed and went out for dinner. We decided we wanted to go somewhere interesting, since it's our anniversary and all, so we went to a Swiss restaurant around the corner. I know, what the hell kind of food do the Swiss eat? It was so good. Very nice atmosphere. Quiet and romantic, prettily decorated, and the staff was very friendly. I had a pomegranate champagne cocktail, and Bob had a margarita. We started with a nice mixed green salad with balsamic vinaigrette, then had onion soup. It was some of the best we've ever had. Thick, rich, and flavorful. After that, we had beef fondue. Oh, man, was it good. Filet mignon fondue with some incredible sauces. here was a hollandaise, a bearnaise, and two brown sauces that I couldn't identify. It was amazing. After we studded ourselves on tender, rare fried meat, I had a coffee and we headed back to the room, where we are now, all tucked in for the night. All in all, a great first day. I'll blog again tomorrow and tell you how the Daily Show was. We don't know what else we're going to do tomorrow, so I'll let you know after we do it! G'night all!
