Broken Clocks

Going to the grocery store is one of my favorite chores
I grew up going to the grocery store with my mother
Just about every other day running errands
It is the modern market-place of abundance

I started to go to Whole Foods in graduate school
Mostly because it was the closest grocery store to my apartment
I did not have a car in Boston
And going to the Prudential Center for Groceries can be annoying

So I chose the hills

There was one large hill over the Boston Commons
Beacon Hill which leads down to Whole Foods
The way back was carrying as many groceries as I could
Straight up that hill, back through the commons, back into my apartment

If I requested something from the store from my mother
She would always ask me to question if I really needed it
The freedom to chose what we buy and eat is liberating
Making, preparing your own food, planning meals is freeing

Because you are reliant on yourself for sustaince
Sure you did not kill any of the meat or grow any of the fruits
But you made the choice to make your own meals
And they will be healthier and tastier than any take-out

So going to the grocery store for me is like going to heaven
I can walk in and buy whatever I want
I browse up and down the aisles and pick a little here
A little there

But recently my favorite chore has become traumatic
Like going to the forefront of the battle scene
Full mask, gloves and waiting in lines to be let in and out
Fighting to keep the shelves stocked with bread and paper-towels

I suck it up and tell myself I have to do this
All I have to do is go to the store one day
And I will be all set until next week
Of course the plan holds, but next week melted
