Everybody complained about Lavina. Everybody insisted she was the problem here. I can see their point but my problem was always with Carlisle. I do not want Carlisle around.
I disagree with your idea that Fellowes has these little fantasies that he's living out.
I'll start with Robert and Cora as I've seen this mentioned before and I'm afraid it annoys me rather. Yes, Cora was the one to apologise and Robert was the one who did the worst damage, but I don't think the show agrees with that at all, or is trying to show it being right - it just makes the most sense!
Cora has, most definitely, let her marriage become sidelined and not been as attentative to Robert and his mid life crisis as she ought. Her apology is acknowelding this and I love that Cora is willing to admit her mistakes.
HOWEVER - that in no way means Robert is allowed to have an affair and Cora has no idea about Jane and I doubt Robert will ever tell her! WE the audience know it's Robert who's the most in the wrong, but NO ONE else knows, bar Robert and Jane! How can he apologise for that, without telling her? Yes, he should tell her, but it's very human that he doesn't. What I love most though, is Robert acknowledging this in the only way he can - by saying Cora doesn't have to apologise! IT'S THAT LINE which shows that the TV show isn't trying to blame Cora - but that Robert KNOWS he's done wrong and is apologising for it in the only way he knows how to...
Okay - sorry, just had to comment on that!!
Going back to Mary! I do think the idea that Mary is supposedly based on his wife is interesting (let's just hope Matthew is based on him!).
I just think he's making things difficult for Mary now for drama, but she'll ultimately get her happy ending. He'd never marry her off to Carlisle - it simply would ruin the storylines!! I mean, Mary would be away from Downton, no longer able to participate in on the greatest couples on television and would just be plain miserable and trapped!
Nope, not going to happen - the wedding will be stopped, I just hope by either Matthew or, better yet, Mary herself!
