On being a fan..

Jun 06, 2004 09:27

I've been reading some of the "stuff" about the GoTR concert. For some time now, I've been facinated by this idea of being a fan. I've never met James Marsters, but I've got a pic of him as my wallpaper..or do I? I'm going to babble, so I'm trying the cut thing for the first time. ( Read more... )

Personally, I'm interested in the characters as opposed to the actors, and apparently the point just can't be made enough that JAMES ISN'T SPIKE!! Sarah isn't Buffy either, but that's another rant ( ... )

Sarah ISN'T Buffy? Sorry. But that's an issue near and dear to my heart. I'm always blown away by how vicious people got toward her. It's just hateful.

Since this is my LJ, I'm going out on a limb here and saying if it's true that he's dating (and I use that term loosely) people almost 25 years his junior, it squicks me a bit and I don't have a lot of respect for it. I'm completely aware that it's my own issue and hang-up, and I'm certain there are LOADS of mature, 17 year olds out there to call me on it, but 25 years of living should count for something. Call me what you will, but it's just so damn cliche' and it makes my inner purple wearing old woman scream "grow the hell up".

There I said it. People can commence the hating now.

Oh and I think I should say here that I don't know that this is something he does, so at this point, it isn't something I even consider about him (until of course people bring it up). It's an opinion I have about men dating way younger women..not about James himself since I don't know him well enough to have that kind of opinion about him.

Yeah, the Sarah hate is scary. I hear Hermione/Emma is starting to come in for her share of being despised by the fans. What is it about strong and non-shy women that draws so much rage?

As for the age deal, they can hate both of us. I'll hop off the limb and say that I think a 20-year age gap, particularly when one of the persons involved is high-school age, is squicky. No matter how mature both parties are, there is still a significant power imbalance to the relationship. The imbalance increases when Person A is a well-known actor and Person B is a fan of Person A.

Once more with feeling, I don't know that James has done this. I hear he's a flirt, and that was probably what was happening during the incident mentioned in the review. I'm talking about the phenomenon in general.

I've never caught him in an interview or anything, so I have no idea what he sounds like when someone else isn't giving him the script. I caught him briefly on Hollywood Squares years ago and I remember thinking that he looked really hyper-active. That's all I remember. (Other than the fact I thought he looked delish.)
