this is for schoool. Digging Responsibility is essential to success in life. Without it, one may not have the means for survival. It prepares one for what lies ahead as well as how to be independent. “I only wanted the dollar allowance he gave me each week, and the dollar and a quarter I earned caddying for him on the weekend and Wednesday afternoons” (Dubus pg. 30). Digging in a three foot deep muddy ditch with a pick is not what Andre Dubus had in mind In the story Digging, a young, rail thin boy named Andre, at the tender age of sixteen, learned what it was to be responsible and to work hard. At first Andre stated; “I did not want to work. I wanted to drive around with my friends, or walk with them downtown, to stand in front of the department store, comb our ducktails, talk, look at girls” (Dubus pg. 30). But being thrust into hard labor by his father, Andre soon learned how to be independent and responsible all on his own.
