For No Man

"Well, Holmes, old cock, I guess...I guess this must be the end. The water is still getting deeper, I'm towing Stupid Watson along by his collar, it's up to my shoulders, and you must be very nearly having to swim for it."

"Don't rub it in, old boy."

"I wasn't, although I can see how you might think that."

"No, Stupid Watson, don't drop the light!"

"No jam?"

"Well, that's done it. We're goners for sure now. Holmes, I...I mean, if we're going to die here, I...I have something to tell you. I..."

"Look, Watson! Up ahead! With the lantern gone, I can see a glimmer of light!"

"Jam?"

"I can just make it out. But Holmes, I..."

"Come on my dear! Hurrah! It's Lestrade and his men. We're saved!"

***

"That water was cold. It's good to be out of there at last. But you were going to say something, old boy?"

"Never mind."
