The world, for once in such a long while, feels real. The grass underfoot is slightly prickly and uneven-only grazers and the occasional fire probably cut it, Vanille guesses. Typical Gran Pulse grassland; she never saw this patch before but it still was familiar. From the small hill, Vanille can see several low-flying wyverns a ways off diving in between more hills. Placing her hands on her hips she turns around to wait for her friend to catch up. “Ranka, there’s a river up ahead!” Vanille doesn’t shout, but isn’t able to keep the excitement out of her voice.

Ranka catches up faster than she thought she would. Not bad, for a city girl, but still too slow for Vanille. By the time Ranka is by her side again, Vanille is shifting between standing on her left foot and standing on her right. “How do you know that, Vanille-chan?” Ranka asks and her hair automatically shields her eyes from the sun. Vanille giggles at that and only giggles more when Ranka blushes.

“Silly, don’t you see those monsters? How they’re diving? They’re fishing!”

Ranka squints as she puts down her pack by Vanille’s. “Really?”

Vanille pats her shoulders, nodding and grinning. “Sure, they probably usually eat bigger prey but it’s been a poor season-these tall grasses aren’t that good for eating, notice that they aren’t chewed on? No grazer would eat these. So they’re probably thinking fish would be better than starving. ”

She blinks. “Wow… How do you know all that, Vanille-chan?” Ranka’s tone is mixed with amazement and reverence.

“Oh, that? It’s just something I picked up. Nothing to it, really,” Vanille says easily, picking up her pack again and swinging it over her shoulders. She doesn’t have to look to know that Ranka’s eying her sideways with just a little disbelief. “We can camp by that, the monsters should be gone by then.”

“What if they’re not?” Ranka asks and the worry isn’t hidden. She’s not really afraid of a fight but the monsters of Gran Pulse are foreign. Vanille understands.

Vanille tips her head back and laughs. “Then I’ll chase ‘em off, hehe. I’ll race you!” With that cry, she dives forward and starts running through the tall grass.

Ranka is left swinging her arms and trying to make her stop. “Vanille-chan--!”
