WELL, THAT WAS UNEXPECTED!

Here in my office in North Carolina, we've been listening to weather reports off and on all day about the upcoming threat of Hurricane Irene, which at least one fairly local radio station has said will hit between Wilmington and Atlantic Beach sometime late on Saturday.

I was sitting at my desk about 30 minutes ago when the building began to creek and shake. Not severely; sort of like when a strong gust of wind hits your car. I immediately glanced out the window behind my desk at a nearby tree and there was no sign of any wind blowing at all, then I thought about the fact that as large as our building here is, it would probably require hurricane-force winds to make it shake like that.

People all over the building began chattering about what it could have been, and we were speculating that it might have been an earthquake, but earthquakes almost never happen in North Carolina. Then one of the guys in the office got a call from his wife, who works 2 hours away from us, and she'd felt it in her office.

We found out we weren't crazy a little after that; yahoo now has a headline saying a 5.8 quake in Virginia was felt in D.C., New York City and North Carolina.

I haven't heard anything about damages where the quake was actually centered, and everything nearby me is fine as far as I know...other than a little surprised.
