I completely agree with you that the autograph thing could be handled much better than it is. I have often said doing something inside the theatre where they could have an organized line moving past Dan seated at a table would be much safer and would be more fair to the people who are only in NY for the one night to see that one show. If you can't wait outside during the show, you stand very little chance of getting an autograph, while those people who didn't spend a dime to see the show seem to be the ones who always get lucky.
But for how they are doing it now, I think the reason Dan just goes down each side once then is taken away is because the people who have crowded in behind those who are closest to the barriers and did get autographs are keeping them from being able to move out of the way so someone else can get the front spot. If they can't move for others to have access to Dan, there isn't much value in Dan staying out there any longer than he does.
