JINGLE ALL THE WAY

I did something today that I swore many years ago I would never do again.

I got up and went Christmas shopping today, but I was technically more of a shopping assistant. My daughter wanted me to go with her, and the ONLY reason I agreed to go is that ever since she's been married and out of the house, she's asked me to do things with her five minutes before she wants to do them. And almost all the time, I have to say "no" because I can't do them on such short notice. This time she asked a week ahead so even though I didn't want to go, I felt like I almost had to, otherwise it would ruin all my efforts toward trying to teach her to make plans ahead.

At any rate, given the mass chaos in most of the places we went, it probably almost required two people to make any progress. Our first stop was Toys-R-Us. We got there just prior to their opening at 5:00 am. There were people lined up for nearly 2 blocks waiting to get inside!

One of her objectives was a Wii game console, so I got in the line for that ... where I remained, moving forward at a snail's pace for nearly an hour. She ran around picking up "doorbuster" items throughout the store, and eventually I got the Wii.

It was the same everywhere we went, even at BoJangles when we finally stopped for breakfast. The line there to get food took half an hour to get through!

The mall was a madhouse, and I can't even begin to decribe how annoyed I got with the sales reps at the little merchandise booths that are out in the walkways. It was like being at the carnival with the people constantly badgering you to target shoot for a prize or to let them guess your age or weight.

We did have a nice lunch at Logan's, although I had to laugh a bit when Equus came up in our conversation. She asked why I'd been to NY, and although she'd known I went to London to see that play last year, she was apparently the last human on earth to know about the nudity in it. She informed me that it was both "sick" and "disgusting" that I'd want to see something like that. But then, I'm sure she has no clue about the context of the play (nor does she care); therefore, she does not understand why it needs to be done without clothes. She just thinks I wanted to see ... well, you can guess what she thought.

Sometimes I wonder how she can even be mine.

I did get a little of my shopping done, but I've still got loads left to do. Tis the season, and all that rubbish.

family, christmas, personal
