So! I am feeling creative today! I should write fic, really. But I am also in a sharing mood, so today's post will be all about mp3s. Specifically, fic-writing mp3s. I get a lot of my fic inspiration from music, be it an idea for a story or a mood or what have you. I'd like to share some of my favorite writing songs with you - maybe you'll be inspired, too!
All links are to Sendspace. You are more than welcome to snag as many of these as you'd like, and it would be lovely if you told me which ones you took. And if any of them inspire you to write, I'd like to see that, too!
Trinity's Inspirational Playlist - The Short Version
music for indulging my pilotlove obsession
Michael Buble - Home - This one really evoked the mood of
"Momentum" for me. The main focus of that piece was lonely!Jamie, and this song is definitely all about being lonely. And Michael Buble, I could listen to that man sing the phone book.
Another aeroplane, another sunny place,
I'm lucky I know but I wanna go home
I've got to go home
Let me go home...
I'm just too far from where you are
I wanna come home
Delta Goodrem - Last Night On Earth - I love the urgent movement of this song. It's good for writing angst, and it's also got a sort of hopeful feeling to it, too. I think it was
carrielh who decided this was the ultimate song for pilots, and she's right. It's gorgeous.
No matter how many miles stand between us, this is love
If tomorrow never comes, I want you to know right now that I
I'm gonna love you until the day I die
And if tomorrow falls asleep, can you hold me first?
I'm gonna love you like it's the last night on Earth
Frou Frou - Let Go - This one was on repeat the whole time I was writing
"Minimum Safe Distance." It's uncomplicated and worked really well for inspiring a fic about pilots that wasn't about angst or unrequited love.
So let go, jump in
Oh, well, whatcha waiting for?
It's all right, cause there's beauty in the breakdown...
It gains the more it gives and then it rises with the fall
So hand me that remote, can't you see that all that stuff's a sideshow?
Chantal Kreviazuk - Time - I've written a couple fics with this in the background, mostly
my Harry Potter stuff, I think. And
"Color Moving and Still," the title of which I actually yoinked from another Chantal Kreviazuk song. It's kind of wistful, which I like.
Time, where did you go?
Why did you leave me here alone?
Wait, don't move so fast, I'm missing the moments as they pass
I've looked in the mirror and the world's getting clearer
So wait for me this time
Sia - Numb - This one's good for introspective, angsty pieces. It's very Starbuck and Apollo, I think.
You made me smile today, you spoke with many voices
Traveled miles today, shared expressions, voiceless
It has to end to begin...
Living in your head without anything to numb you
Living on the edge without anything to numb you
Jen Wood - Imperfect - Man, I adore this song. Talk about uber-angsty. It's a good song to put on repeat when you're trying to ratchet up the angst in a fic - all melancholy guitar and sad lyrics. It's very Kara.
Sometimes it seems easier to leave everything unsaid
But it only gets worse if it stays in your head
I look back and listen to the words that I've said
Yeah, I must admit I disagree with some of them
So don't peer over my shoulder as if I'm hiding a flaw
I never said I was perfect, so why don't you back off
Joss Stone - Jet Lag - This is the song that played in my head when I wrote the kitchen scene in "Momentum." This song always reminds me of Dragon*Con last year, when I danced around the kitchen in the early morning light while Moo made blueberry pancakes. I tried to capture that feeling in
"Momentum," and how a moment like that just sweeps you up and carries you wherever your mind wants to go. The loose, deep, soul beat in this song is just irresistible.
I got jet lag and I never even left the ground
See, it's like that every time you come around
Oh, I'm so hung over and I never even touched a drop
I can't get enough, this must be love...jet lag...
Heather Nova - Paper Cup - This one's a sweet and sad love song, plain and simple. Sweet without being mushy, a little bit melancholy and quite lovely. It always makes me think of the scene from Alias with Syd and Vaughn dancing in the train station.
Wishful thinking, you might be mine
Every shiver sends one breath under the bridge of sighs
Bending where the river bends...
And everything stands so still when you dance
Everything spins so fast
And the night's in a paper cup when you want it to last
So, what kind of music inspires you to write?
