Loving Something Problematic (FOGcon panel followup)

Apr 02, 2012 13:55

24 hours later than I expected, this is the promised discussion space for the "Loving Something Problematic" FOGcon panel followup.

If you were not present during Sunday morning's panel, please say so in your initial comment. As usual, the LJ discussion is designed for 101 conversation, the DW space is one where you are expected to be able to hold your own in discussions of race. If you have questions about where you belong, you're probably best off on the LJ side. I will be dropping in periodically to monitor the LJ discussion, but for the next 24 hours I will be in transit between the Bay Area and SoCal, and offline for significant periods. I will be available via SMS for those who have my number, if anything requires urgent attention.

I am trusting you all not to erupt into flames.

LJ:
Discussions about semantics - what is "problematic", what are examples of problematic pieces, what makes them problematic, how does one feel about discovering problematic content...these are all LJ-sphere. It may be useful to read through my tags on "racism", "it's an iceberg", "language is power", "!@#$! tone argument", "some powderkegs are necessary", "all I learned about social justice", "poc america", "postracial my ass", "we're all in this together"

DW:
The DW side is likely to be rough and tumble if you are not up to speed on the state of the state in social justice discussion. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

My thoughts on this panel tomorrow, or later today as time permits. I wanted to get this post up ASAP, and it's already later than I'd hoped. Onward!

This entry is cross-posted at http://trinker.dreamwidth.org/364449.html for the convenience of DW users. There are slightly different conversations happening at each. Currently
comments at DW.

some powderkegs are necessary, it's an iceberg, racism, activism
