Well fuck.

I guess it's a good thing I'm not shopping for Christmas this year because apparently I suck at it.

Because it's quickly disappearing from the internet in favor of the "remastered" edition, I snapped up a used copy of volume 3 of Star Trek: the Original Series for my mother about two-three weeks ago. I was going to give it to her for Mother's Day ( Read more... )

holidays, family, i am a consumer whore (and how!)

What's wrong with the "remastered" versions? And I thought the movie looked entertaining.

There's nothing wrong with the remastered editions, except for the fact that they've replaced all the old special effects with new CGI effects. I wouldn't mind if they included both versions, but it seems like they're phasing out the original versions entirely, a la George Lucas.

I was entertained by the new versions, and there's some value in them, but the purist in me wants the original editions.

I don't have a problem with them, personally. It's just that these are for my mother, who wants what she used to watch growing up, not what some executives thought up in order to cash in on her nostalgia. (And ruin it.)

Well, for your mother is one thing, but I think you're probably exaggerating the differences between the "remastered" and original episodes, which should probably total to about 1 minute of differences per show.

I don't think I'm exaggerating anything. I want to get for her what she would want. She wants the dorky phasers and doors that don't always close all the way and the shots of the Enterprise moving in front of space that look like it's a cut-out on a popsicle stick.

And believe me, as a Star Wars fan, even one minute is too much when you're talking about meddling with something beloved for what it was, flaws and all. ::thinks of "special editions," curls up into a ball::
