Summary: Sakura has a vision that sets her on a path to the truth about her family.
By the time she was 20, Mihara Sakura had gotten so used to having unusual visions that it took a lot to faze her. But every now and then, she would have a vision that would shake her to her very core. Recently, she was having more and more of those visions that shook her, especially since her family’s arrival in Blue Bay Harbor, the reuniting of her with her lost sisters and Sonomi’s determined campaign to break Zakuro and steal Arashi’s power for her own.
The worst had been a vision of utter destruction, which altered Sakura to the danger approaching and while she could not ignore it, she chose not to focus on it. Of course, then, something else happened that made her start wondering about the origins of her family.
It had begun benignly, faded visions of a woman eating a pomegranate, singing a song Sakura faintly remembered from her childhood. Then it had expanded, to include memories and voices, things Sakura’s power had never allowed her to forget, no matter how young she was. She could hear a woman speaking to a man, presumably Mihara Kai, her father, and laughing.
“What will we name this new one, Kai? I was only expecting twins, Zakuro and Setsuna… this third one is a surprise. What will we name her?”
“Well, we named Zakuro for my favorite fruit, and Setsuna for the moment we met… I think you should name this third one, Kikyo. Give her a name that is special to you.”
Sakura had wondered who Kikyo was. She’d never heard the name before.
“I will name her Sakura… after my favorite flower.” The woman, presumably Kikyo, laughed. “Kai, my love, I believe this one will have your gift… the gift of future sight. She’s special. No wonder the Elders made me believe I was having twins.”
When Sakura awoke from the dreams, she began to wonder who Kikyo was. She had never heard the name before and Sakura had long thought she had seen it all and heard it all by now, especially relating to the bloodline.
As she looked into the identity of the unknown Kikyo, it occurred to Sakura that Kikyo and not Sonomi was actually her mother. It would explain many things, such as Setsuna’s revelation that Sonomi’s memory had huge gaps in it, especially relating to their births, the disconnect between them… even the fact that Sonomi didn’t share any of their powers.
Sonomi had stolen them from their true mother…. It all made perfect sense.
With this in mind, Sakura went looking for their father, Mihara Kai, the only male ever born into the Mihara family line. She wanted answers… and she wanted them NOW.
On the way to her father’s hiding spot, Sakura didn’t pay attention to the road like she should have and was suddenly blindsided by another car, knocking her unconscious.
When she came to, or at least, was mentally oriented, she was surprised to find her head in the lap of a very beautiful young woman, a graceful hand stroking through her hair.
“Where am I?” Sakura asked.
“Someplace safe where your soul can rest while doctors save your body.” The woman replied softly. Her eyes were warm, like Arashi’s, but her face was as striking as Sakura’s own. “Don’t worry, my blossom. They will save you… just as your healing power will save you.”
“Who are you?”
“Look inside your memories. You are the only one who knows me… the only one who remembers me.”
Sakura closed her eyes for a brief moment and as deep into her memories as she possibly could. Suddenly, she saw the same woman, holding a black bundle in her arms, cooing and laughing.
“Yes, that’s a good name for her. Mihara…Sakura….”
Suddenly, Sakura knew. “Mother?”
The woman’s eyes almost immediately filled with tears. “I never thought I would ever hear those words again… Mother… it fills me with joy…”
“You… are you Kikyo?”
“Yes… that is the name your father gave me. In reality, like Phoenix has no true body, I have no true name. So, when I met your father, he named me himself.” Kikyo smiled. “I am the Japanese goddess of female warriors… my greatest gift to the world were my six daughters, powerful, clever and beautiful ninjas: Zakuro, Setsuna, Arashi, Yuriko, Retasu and of course, you, my Sakura.”
“But…” Sakura was confused.
“You six are powerful not just because of me, but also because of your father’s family. The Miharas are matriarchal because they are the descendants of goddesses and they like keeping it that way. Your father’s birth was quite a shock… and that ridiculous prophecy didn’t help.”
“You mean the one that says that the first male born into the Mihara family will bring with him a great evil?” Sakura had heard this story before, from her Aunt Michiru. “Surely, they didn’t think…”
“Your father’s younger sisters, with the exception of Michiru, were, unfortunately, not very smart.” Kikyo explained. “Neither was the rest of his family, save for your grandmother, Usagi, who refused to kill her own child. She knew that the great evil was not your father himself, like so many thought… but in fact, Sonomi.” Kikyo sounded angry. “Sonomi, the daughter of what can be described as Hades Gods, or underworld Gods, was the great evil. She attached herself to your father, glamoured herself to appear like me and banished me to another realm and abducted my own children. I’ve been stuck here ever since.”
“But Mother, you’re a goddess!” Sakura was floored. “How could she stick you here?”
“Sonomi has the powers of hell at her disposal, powers great enough to bring down gods. Why she wants Arashi’s powers, I’ll never know, but, she summoned a spell that banished me here and so, I have been forced to watch as she tore apart my family, attempted to kill the man I was willing to give up immortality for, and, the most painful… watch her break Zakuro down.” Kikyo looked like she may cry again. “Sakura, I cannot tell you how many tears I have shed, watching Zakuro’s mind break and warp, watching her become consumed by her anger and fury… and here I am, powerless! I can’t save her before it’s too late…”
“Mother, it’s all right. Setsuna and I… we are working to bring Zakuro back to some semblance of sanity.” Sakura sat up, embracing Kikyo in a warm hug. “Don’t worry so much…”
Kikyo sniffled. “Sakura, don’t you wonder… aren’t you wondering why only you have been able to see me, speak to me, remember me?”
“It’s part of my powers.” Sakura replied. “I never forget anything. And I figured that you would probably need to be able to contact someone with incredible psychic abilities… like myself or Setsuna.” A pause. “…Or Arashi.”
“Arashi has always known that I am her true mother.” Kikyo said. “The problem is that she hasn’t been able to connect the dots like you have... but once she knows, I think you and her should work together. The two of you may be able to free me from this place. It’s not hell… but my place is by your father’s side.”
Sakura went back to allowing her mother to stroke her hair. “How did you meet Dad anyway?”
“Your father found me, actually.” Kikyo had a warm smile. “I had been sent to the human world by the elder gods to study it and to see if there were warriors worthy of my training. He found me in the forest, naked and dirty and he took me to his home, washed me and gave me a name when I told him I had none. “ She laughed. “I fell in love with him almost on the spot. He was such a handsome young man… and so kind. Sometimes, he is what Zakuro would have been like had Sonomi not utterly destroyed her.”
“Did the elder gods… did they… did they make you leave him?’ Sakura asked.
“No. To our surprise, they allowed me to stay with him. When I became pregnant, it was cause for celebration for it meant that a prophecy that told of the birth of six powerful warriors would come to pass. I was so happy. I would have my own daughters to train… to teach how to become warrior goddesses in their own right.” Kikyo sighed dreamily. “And that was when, around Tanbata, your father proposed marriage.”
“What happened then?”
“Sonomi.” Kikyo was sounding angry again. “After I gave birth, she wormed her way into Kai’s life and once she learned I was expecting a very special child, a storm caller… well, you know the rest.”
“Still doesn’t explain why she wants Arashi’s power.”
“It’s not for her.” Kikyo sighed. “It’s for her mother, Hades Beast Gorgon.”
“Oi vey…” Sakura sighed for a moment before realizing that her mother was fading. “Mother!”
“Don’t fret, Sakura. It just means that your body is healed.” Kikyo was reassuring. “I will see you again, don’t worry….”
Sakura’s eyes shot open and she actually sat bolt upright in bed, almost screaming in pain.
“Sakura!” Tsubasa and Arashi were there.
Sakura regarded Arashi for a long moment and then she spoke. “What do you know about a warrior goddess named Kikyo?”
Arashi raised an eyebrow. “Quite a bit… why?”
Sakura patted the side of her hospital bed. “Sit down… I have a lot to tell you.”
