She doesn’t know why she’s here but she is. She swore to herself when she was younger that she’d never be caught in a place like this. But now here she is, sitting at a window booth in a corner of the coffee shop. She absent-mindedly stirs the slim sliver spoon in her dark coffee cup and stares outside. At all the lovers walking by hand in hand, the mothers trying to hold onto their children’s excited figures as they dash down the street, the young girls giggling over probably a text message on one of their cell phones. All of it seemed surreal; she’s numb to these things. All that’s reflected is a glassy look in her eyes.

The coffee shop door opens slowly as the first few raindrops trickle down the huge windowpane. And there he is - all a big fluster of dark short hair and beautiful almond-shaped brown eyes. He catches her eye and they smile for a brief moment. He makes his way towards her table and slides himself gently down on the chair, both him and the coffee brown cushioned seat releasing a sigh.

The waitress sets a mug of hot, steaming coffee down on the table and it’s like a huge furnace between both of them, the intense heat choking the words they were about to say back down into their throats. As the time passes, the heat is replaced with shivers from both of them. She looks out at the window and says thoughtfully,

‘I don’t know how you do it. Really.’

‘Really?’

‘Yes, really.’

He smiles for a bit and slips his hand over hers, resting near to the now-cold coffee mug. He hates the way she looks at his hand like some foreign object and then looks up at him, eyes dark. She looks back down at their hands and he can tell it lightens up for a while when she says,

‘Tell me how.’

‘How what?’

‘How you do this. How you manage to still make me love you after all this.’

‘I thought you didn’t,’ he counters, the glow of a faint smile hidden deep behind his eyes. ‘I don’t want to make you do anything you don’t want to do.’

‘Really?’

‘Really.’

She thinks to herself as she stares outside the window, the faint light washing over her face and he stares on at her.

‘Come with me,’ he says gently but firmly and pulls her out of the coffee shop, the second cup of hot chocolate long forgotten on the table next to the tip.

They walk for a while, until the rain resumes its gentle drizzle. The pace is slowed when she asks about where they’re going. He doesn’t reply, just tightens his grip on her pinky finger and leads her until he gets to an alleyway and pulls her inside.

He pushes her up on the wall and receives a ‘What the hell are you doing?’ before she feels his soft lips advance slowly to steal away hers. She complies and the kiss is soft and comforting, the only thing they’re feeling as the clouds drop their transparent daggers on them, stinging through their clothing.

Soon, his tongue slides slowly and gently across the seam of her lips, asking for permission to explore her mouth. A tilt of her head and a deep, satisfied sigh from her and it’s granted, both their tongues caressing each other slowly, softly, teasing.

He leaves her mouth after a while and they both decide to breathe, something that wasn’t on their important to-do list for a while. He rests his head gently against her forehead and trails a soft, wet finger across her flushed, swollen lips.

‘I told you I wouldn’t let you do anything you don’t want to do.’

She stares at him, a mixture of both shock and contentedness. She wants to know where they’ll take it from here, she needs to know.

‘One step at a time, until we both end up somewhere that we both want to be.’

And she’s happy with that response. Their lips crash softly against the others’ again as he slips his warm, wet hand down to hers and knits them together. And they both melt away into the dark evening, with the soft sighed whispers of ‘saranghae’ floating away into the night.
