For this project I decided to do my own novel. The idea behind this was the potential to use it outside the class as well as it being a project for school. Throughout the process of making the piece there were many problems, particularly in the area of dynamics when rendering in Maya. Elements such as flowing water and wind effect on grass were not things I had done before. This led me to try and improve these elements, particularly the ocean which while originally cartoony was able to be turned into something more realistic.
The original script hit the minute mark, and was much too confusing to be of any use without seamless visuals, something that was impossible to achieve given time constraints. For the final the dialogue was therefore was edited down to be almost entirely just a narration, with the exception of the argument between Kari and her brother. This makes it less chaotic though the dialogue is still too confusing and would need further adjustments to be a proper trailer.
For the imagery I kept to having CGI environments and characters, with the exception of Raku who was portrayed by the ball jointed doll as originally planned. Unfortunately I could not integrate him into a CGI scene, which threw off my original plan of having him be out of place in the rest of the world as portrayed in the trailer. This meant that effects I had planned on did not get included. The light that flickers constantly over the doll, for example, was done intentionally as I was planning on having pieces of his shadow cloak visible as pieces of it moved and constantly dissipated.
The soundtrack for the piece was completely changed from the original, which was a musical piece that was used as filler, and only loosely fit the mood of the clips it accompanied. To replace it, I used a girl humming, keeping with the theme of restricting it to Kari and her narration. I also added in miner sounds for dramatic effect, most noticeable being the one at the end which accompanies Raku’s final appearance.
