OK, so I didn't get to watch this ep 'til today. But... oh, hell, it was great anyway. *grin*
Hiro, Ando:
We've established that Hiro got started on the path to being a great hero at a carnival he visited with Ando and Kimiko fourteen years ago. We also know that Hiro's been freezing up lately... well, it happens again, and shortly afterwards (without meaning to) he's back at the carnival, where (of course) he runs into his younger self.
I have to say... a) seeing as he is one of the original characters, you'd think Hiro would have better control of his powers by now, and b) someone really needs to tell him about the Blinovitch Limitation Effect. There is a reason you're not meant to go back in your own timeline and meet yourself.
Anyway, young!Hiro gets presentday!Hiro to take a photo... and then presentday!Hiro runs into Samuel, our new friend from the carnival.
(not 14-years-ago!Samuel, though. Presentday!Samuel, sent back in time by some old guy called Arnold)
Samuel... has a little talk with Hiro, and tells him that, yes, changing big things in the past messes up the present/future, but changing little things can actually help, if it has any effect at all. He suggests that Hiro stop younger!Ando spilling his drink on younger!Kimiko.. which Hiro does, and fourteen years later, Kimiko doesn't hate Ando, she's been with him "for years". (It was cute...)
I should point out that his conversation with Hiro was what made me really start to like Samuel. I mean, yeah, we don't know anything about him... but I kinda like him anyway. Dammit.
Carnival Folks:
...on the subject of Samuel... what we do know, is that he has what looks like a tattoo of a compass. Only, the compass needle moves. I would REALLY like to know what it is...
Also, we know that Arnold's a timetraveller (and he looked really sick... not a good sign for Hiro I think), and possibly-psychic girl's name is Leah, and Knife Guy's power is apparently superspeed.
Oh... and they seem to be 'collecting' people. Hiro, definitely, and it looks like Sylar, Peter, and Claire are on the list too.
Matt:
Now, Matt's life now looks pretty good. But then, it looked OK in S1, too, and things fell apart then, didn't they?
Some highly amusing scenes later... basically, Janice may-or-may-not be cheating on him (again), and he's got a Head!Sylar. Who's been hanging out in Matt's head for the last six weeks, and quite wants his body back. Oops.
On the other hand, Matt v. Head!Sylar is actually the best thing I've seen since Gaius v. Head!Six. Really, every show needs a Head!Character. 'Tis trufax.
And on the subject of Sylar...
Sylathan:
...is not doing much, mostly freaking out, trying to use the TK that he doesn't know he's got. The significant thing is that I heard ticking. LOUD ticking. The kind Sylar gets right before he cuts someone's head open. I suspect that this going to be good, for Sylar, and bad, for other people. Like Angela.
Claire:
...is at college, and... oh, hang on a second, her M.A.R.E is lying on the sidewalk under their open window, looking distinctly dead. Now, when the cops show, Claire says that she didn't see a suicide note - but the cops DID find one. This leads Claire to start thinking that the M.A.R.E was murdered, and Gretchen (who is really starting to freak me out for some reason) gets involved too... she starts mentioning stealing cadavers from the med school to test whether the dead girl jumped or fell or was pushed (and oh, hey there Crossing Jordan reference... funny, that's a Tim Kring show too, isn't it?).
Claire has a better idea, though, and gets up in the middle of the night to jump out the window herself. The way she lands leads to conclude that yes, dead girl did kill herself. Which would have been a major waste of a subplot... except for the fact the Gretchen saw Claire pick herself up after jumping, so, whoops, cat out of the bag.
Peter:
is awesome. I kinda love how he's actually grown up a bit since last season. He's a lot more mature now, I think.
Angela:
is not in this episode... so she's probably scheming somewhere. It's what she does.
Noah:
Oh, Noah. I go to such emotional extremes with Noah. Last season, say, I hated him, but now... I kinda feel sorry for him, because he's all alone, and he can't cook even WITH a microwave, and he's got no food in the fridge so he ended up eating cereal for dinner.
Oh, and he called Sandra in California... and a strange man picked up. So yeah, he's not having a fun time.
He gets a distraction, though, in the form of Tracy, who calls him from Danko's apartment, where she tells him about Knife Guy and his mad skillz, and then he figures out that yes, KG was looking for something - a key, which Danko somehow found time to swallow, and which KG was trying to cut out of his stomach. EW. Anyhow, the key opens a safety-deposit box, in which Noah (and Peter, who's along for the ride) find a compass. An old, apparently broken compass.
Now, I have questions about that compass. Mostly, because it's only broken when Noah (a person with no ability) holds it. When Peter holds it, it goes crazy. However that compass works, it's not pointing north...
It also proves unlucky for Noah, because after Peter goes back to being a paramedic, KG shows up again, stabs him, and takes the compass before heading back to Samuel. Peter finds him, though, and makes sure he gets to a hospital...
...which is where Tracy comes in again. Now, I think maybe I don't dislike Tracy as much as I thought, because a) I kinda think her and Noah would be awesome partners in the New Company, and b) oh, HELL, I think I ship it. Er. Yeah.
So, um, that's basically it. Kinda want the next episode now.
Also... one question that's been nagging me: Uh, where the hell, exactly, has Mohinder disappeared to? Is he still at the old testing-lab-place from last season? 'Cause, seriously... there wasn't that much left there... oh, never mind, he'll probably show up soon.
EDIT: OK, so, I did some factchecking on HeroesWiki... I found out that a) Knife Guy's name is Edgar (I like it, it suits him), and b) Samuel's ability is listed as "terrakinesis", which I've never heard of but is apparently the ability to move earth and control minerals with his mind.
