OK, I confess.
I went to see GI Joe. Even though its premise is... weak, to say the least.
(Admittedly, the only reason I was interested is because of CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON, who controls a good-sized part of my soul. Yep.)
I have a problem, though. Because the movie... didn't suck. I was expecting the stereotypical Dumb Action Movie with explosions and cool CGI and a mediocre-verging-on-just-plain-bad script.
OK, so there were some issues. The lead's Black Best Friend wasn't treated too well at first, but they made up for it by making him crucial to the climax. And the lead's name is... wait for it.... Duke Hazzard at least that's what I heard.
But aside from that... it wasn't all focused on the Hero. The techy character and the girl got cool stuff as well, and there was a whole subplot involving two very, very kickass Japanese guys.
(Also, there was a mini Abrams-reunion: Mr Eko and Caesar off of Lost, and Rachel Nichols who played the green chick in Star Trek.)
And then there's the random, but somehow AWESOME things, like Unexpected!Jonathan Pryce as the US President, and Unexpected!Brendan Fraser for all of five seconds, and what are possibly the two most badass kids ever in the history of everything.
Tl;dr: it's not as bad as you might think. Really. I promise. Just don't go in with massively high expectations and you'll be fine.
ALSO:
I have a rental DVD of "In The Loop" (about as far from GI Joe as it's possible to get, really).
IT IS WONDERFUL. WONDERFUL AND SARCASTIC AND FOULMOUTHED (FREQUENTLY) AND YOU SHOULD SEE IT RIGHT NOW.
Also, I think I now have a crush on Peter Capaldi. And Chris Addison. Maybe Tom Hollander too.
(James Gandolfini is in it too, adding to the RANDOM today.)
Other rental DVDs I now (temporarily) possess are: Push, The Oxford Murders and something called War, Inc that I've never heard of but that looked funny.
