The Story:
Existing in parallel with our own is another world, known to its people as Aratea. In some ways this other world is much like ours, in other ways it is entirely alien. Where our society functions on electricity and technology, in the parallel world magic is commonplace and accepted.
But all is not right in the land of Aratea. People are disappearing, snatched from their homes with no warning or ransom. Those not taken are left to search fruitlessly for answers.
There are gateways - few in number, and hidden carefully from prying eyes - between our world and Aratea. Sometimes, someone from our world will find their way through...
The Cast:
Anna Torv as Emily Wolff
Emily is an unassuming young woman in her twenties, who works as a administrator in the law firm established by her father. One day, she is looking for some historical files in one of the old archive rooms, and finds a door marked with a strange symbol. Naturally curious, she opens the door and finds herself in an Aratean forest. She leaves the door propped open, and explores a little... soon finding the cabin occupied by the guardian of this particular gateway, Daniel, and his small family.

Daniel, the guardian of the forest gateway, is a mysterious figure who keeps his past - and his motives - hidden away. He has the bearing of an old soldier, someone who has seen wars, but will not answer questions on the matter honestly. Nor will he talk about how he came to be guarding the forest's gateway. He occupies a small, but comfortable, cabin with his daughter Anna. He has a strong temper, is volatile at times and is prone to very dark moody periods. Anna is the only person who is able to calm him if he becomes angry. He has a strong gift for the magics of fire and air, and has a special affinity for the birds that live in his forest.

Everyone who knows Anna thinks of her as a sweet, caring young woman who will always try to help those in need. She has looked after her father since the disappearance of her mother several years earlier. Of the residents of the cabin, she has the most contact with the world outside the forest, as she makes frequent trips to the nearby village to trade.

Dana Davis as Kaila Ford
Kaila's parents disappeared from their farm on the edge of the forest three years earlier, leaving Kaila and her brother Tommy alone. They were found by Anna, who persuaded her father to let the siblings come to live in the cabin. Kaila is one of a small number of people in Aratea who have no magical talent, however she has compensated for this by training herself to become a skilful hunter - both of conventional animals and of more unusual, supernatural creatures.

Malcolm David Kelley as Tommy Ford
Tommy was a normal, energetic eleven-year-old before the disappearance of his parents. Since then he has become quieter and more serious, and spends a lot time by himself. His magical talents have not yet fully emerged, but it is likely that his affinity will be for earth magic.

Tom Ward as Archer
Very little is known about Archer's background... but he is feared by everyone who encounters him. Or at least, the ones who survive the encounter, because Archer is a skilled assassin and mercenary. Presently he is working under the employ of the shadowy 'Mr. Forrester', seeking out anyone perceived as a threat.

Bill Moseley as Mr. Forrester
The shadowy man known only as Mr. Forrester was not born in Aratea. He was born and grew up in New Jersey, and like Emily he discovered one of the gateways as a young man. Forrester is devoutly religious, and when he saw what he perceived as pagan, unholy people using magic on a daily basis, he vowed to change Aratean society and bring his own religious values to the world he found himself in. After many years he had almost totally reinvented himself and attained some real power as the lord of a prosperous fiefdom. Only a very few know of his connection to the mysterious disappearances.
