First day of "real job":
I've been planning for days. I've been planning lessons hardcore since last Thursday. I still had a lot to do, but I thought I had Monday done and the next two weeks at least under control.
I get to school Monday morning, make my last-minute copies and run errands.
My A period students walk in. They look a little bigger than I was expecting them to be. I thought my A Period was Modern World History, which makes them freshmen, right? They all walk in... I look around and realize, these guys are juniors, I'm supposed to teach them US II. I quickly walk over to the board, change "WWI" to "WWII," grab the copies I'd made for the E Period US II class, and pretend nothing happened.
That anecdote sums up today pretty well. I felt like I was dodging grenades all day and I am absolutely swamped, but it went okay. The kids in the bad class... well, they weren't good, but they're never good. They're not supposed to be good. We had a nice chat about Hitler, it was nice. And one of the "scary kids" is my pal now, so that's a small victory. Let's just hope the two drug dealers skip again tomorrow.... I don't want to deal with them yet.
