Your Hip, Daddy-O

Jun 10, 2008 15:04

Dad completed his hip surgery last night and all went smoothly. The surgeon is one of the most experienced at replacing hip replacements that failed. He said it was challenging but that it worked out well. Dad may get to come home from the hospital on Thursday, though he will have to stay under nursing care for a couple of weeks. He says he is very relieved to have this taken care of. It was causing him a lot of pain, and some anxiety since the replacement replacement is a more tricky operation.

He has a patent patient-on-demand pain control system. With this the patient can press a button when he or she starts to feel uncomfortable and a little dose of morphine is injected into his IV drip. Apparently this not only helps patients be more pain-free, but also uses less morphine that the traditional method of calling nurse, nurse eventually responds, nurse goes to get morphine (and possibly also permission), nurse eventually returns and administers morphine to patient who by this time is in considerable pain and needs a higher dose to overcome it.
