I am watching the Smoking Gun Presents World's Dumbest Competitions 2 - and they have mutton busting (riding sheep) listed and wonder why parents would make their kids do this.

.....but....but....it's fun!!

I begged my mom to let me. Dad didn't even know, as he was getting ready to help with the rodeo. In fact, one of the other workers told him 'hey, that's your kid!' after the sheep had sort of somersaulted with me and Dad didn't believe him at first. heh
I was mighty mad at the stupid sheep too - if she hadn't done that, I would have won. All the other sheep were standing calm while they were lining them up* except mine, who was lunging around like a crazy thing and tuckered herself out, hence the stumbling and then somersaulting.

And I wanted to keep riding, so I obviously wasn't traumatized. After that first one? I'd win too. Whooo! The stock contracter ended up giving me a trophy buckle at the end of the summer, too.
I was damn proud of that buckle.

I really wanted to ride calves when I got to old/big to ride sheep but Mom wouldn't let me. :(

*Now a days, they put the sheep in a chute and turn them out individually, but when I was a kid they were all just lined up and turned loose at the same time.
They also seem to have the kids sort of lay on the sheep with their hands gripping the wool by the neck and their feet at the sheeps flanks. I used a pair of reins like a bull rope, that we put around the body of the sheep that I gripped while sitting up. More like actually riding.
