~ Previous Chapters ~ Chapter 15: Birthday & Emergency
Summer was over too soon… Fall didn’t feel that long anymore as the cold of winter breezed around him. It’s already early November and here was Jaejoong at the largest Mall in Seoul; exhausted after a long day accompanying his boys filming their CF. It’s already 8.45pm, he only had a little more than an hour to find Moonbin’s birthday present.
The past 6 months was a torture for him. He didn’t intend to be so busy but it’s inevitable with his boys’ popularity. Each one of them has their own shows and various activities. He kept moving from one place to another and his days off were used for planning and helping Yoochun in the agency’s monthly audition. Though JiHye occasionally brought him home for napping, most of the time he was out and could only return after they left. He felt miserable.
JiHye made a video call for him a few times when he was always rushing and Moonbin ended up crying from missing him. Yunho’s sister told him that Moonbin was talking less by each day. And Yunho seemed unable to keep his promise to spend more time with his son. He’s started a job in a movie since 2 months ago, and if not shooting he’s constantly on Min Young’s side. Once or twice he would play with the boy but whenever his daughter made a slight noise or looked a little paler than usual, the boy’s left playing with his Grandparents or JiHye again.
So when Yunho’s parents told him that they should make a little party for Moonbin’s 3rd birthday this Saturday night, Jaejoong was excited. He planned to take Moonbin home after the party and take a few days off to spend with him. The older Jungs didn’t mind but he’d still have to ask for Yunho’s permission; he’s Moonbin’s father after all. Right now, he just have to find the perfect present for the boy.
He felt his mobile vibrated and looked at the caller ID. Yoochun. He pressed the ‘accept call’ button.
“Hello.”
“Where are you? I thought you’re done with the filming but Lee Joon told me that the driver dropped you off at Coex.”
Jaejoong frowned, his lover sounded a bit irritated.
“Yeah, Saturday is Moonbin’s birthday party so I’m trying to find him a present. You’re also invited you know.”
“…”
“Hello? Yoochun?”
“Yeah, I know. Fine, I understand. I just thought that since we both ended our schedule early tonight maybe we could hang out together at your home or something. But doesn’t seem like it.”
“Why not? As soon as I get the present I’ll be home before 10. Are you there already?”
“I am and I’ll wait for you. Oh, buy something for him from me too, will you?”
Jaejoong chuckled, “No need, I’ll just give the present from both of us. Since you’re joining, I guess I could buy something a little more pricey if it’s okay for you?”
“Heh, anything for you babe. The little guy deserves something good. Just hurry home so we have more time together tonight, got me?”
“Great. See you soon.” He pushed the ‘end call’ button.
He took a deep sigh. His relationship with Yoochun hadn’t been great either. Ever since he met Yunho when he came to pick up Moonbin months ago, he felt that his lover had been holding back something when they’re together. Like… he’s afraid to be all out when he was with him.
Even their sex felt a bit restraint. Jaejoong sometimes felt a little ashamed for being so clingy and needy with their sex. Though Yoochun always complied to his request and demands, there’s still something lack that left him hanging for a few second after their orgasm and it really bugged him.
But Yoochun sounded like he’s in a good mood on the phone after he promised him to be home soon, maybe he should get him something too from the Mall. “Better hurry now so I can get home early, and probably we can have a talk too before bed.” He thought as he walked faster and scanned the view around him to find the perfect present for Moonbin.

There were colorful origami papers in any shape all around the living room at the Jungs’ mansion. A little party was under preparation for Jung Moonbin’s third birthday. As much as the kid wanted to have balloons too, his father strongly said no. He was afraid that if it any of it burst it would startle Min Young; and who knows what her heart would decide to do.
Moonbin cheerily answered with an enthusiastic “Okay” to his father, but JiHye knew that he was a little disappointed. He wasn’t allowed to make a noise when he’s playing inside the house, afraid that it would wake Min Young who’s sleeping most of the time. And when he wanted to play with her (only by sitting on her crib and poking her cute cheeks, mind you) Yunho would say that he should find something else to play with. JiHye noticed that her nephew always put up a happy face in front of his brother, but then he would choose to play or draw by himself in his own bedroom.
No matter how many times JiHye or her parents tried to tell Yunho that he hadn’t been fair to Moonbin, Yunho would go defensive and told them that he’s just trying his best as a father and Moonbin would understand. She hoped that he could see for himself how pity the view looked like to see his son drawing their family silently in his room and only able to show it to his Grandparents, Aunt and Uncle afterwards. Well, sometimes Jaejoong too, through some video calls. But lately she had been trying not to make any, as it would make Moonbin cried seeing Jaejoong’s face in her mobile screen. At least after the party tonight he would spend a few days with him… it’s a good thing that Yunho agreed.
JiHye was busy getting her salad done in the kitchen when Jaejoong came in.
“Hello JiHye, not much progress in the kitchen, I see.” He teased her while giving her a kiss on the cheek.
“Oppa, you’re early! Are you coming alone or together with Yoochun Oppa?” she winked at him.
“Ah, we met at the office and decided to carpool here.” He replied, and she could see him blush. So cute, he’s still shy about his relationship with another man other than her brother.
“Have you seen the birthday boy outside? He’s been waiting for you… well, for your present to be exact!”
Jaejoong grinned, “It’s obvious! He just gave me a kiss and ran to Yoochun when I told him that he got the present! I guess he’s opening it with your parents right now.”
JiHye just shook her head. She had finished with the gravy and was about to bring them to the dining room.
“JiHye, where’s Yunho? I’ve been here for almost half an hour and haven’t seen him around. Is he working? Yoochun told me that his schedule’s been cleared for today?”
JiHye put the salad bowl back on the kitchen counter and sighed. “He’s upstairs in Min Young’s room.”
“Oh, is she fine? I guess I’ll come up later to say hi to the baby.”
“She’s fine… just didn’t drink enough of her milk today. He’s worried, that’s all… don’t worry, we’ll bring her down when it’s time to blow the candle.” She replied but didn’t move from her spot.
Silence stretched inside the room. JiHye wanted to say more but she’s not sure how. Fortunately the young man understood and he asked first as he approached her.
“Honey, something on your mind?”
“Oppa… can I ask for a big favor?” she asked him hesitantly.
Jaejoong raised his eyebrows, “Favor? Just how big it is that it took you awhile to ask me?” he took her hand in his.
“Please talk to Yunho Oppa before you leave with Binnie tonight. He’s- I know that this is not easy for him, working and taking care of 2 children. Even though we’re always there to help, he kept insisting that he could do it himself. He’s too occupied with Min Young and- and Binnie seemed too understanding for a 3 year old. He kept saying that ‘Appa has to take care of Min Young so she can grow up to play with Binnie’ and happily hopped off to his room or outside by the fish pond.”
“Is that all?”
“No… I just think that Yunho Oppa also needs to have time for himself. I could see that he’s very lonely. Other than working, he’s always home to watch over Min Young and Moonbin. Umma and Appa told him to leave them home once in awhile, drink with the crews or you and Yoochun Oppa… But even my husband couldn’t get him out for ‘in-laws bonding’ or something!” she seemed desperate now.
“He’s lonely… I know… he should trust us to care for his children you know.” She looked at him, “so can you please talk to him Oppa? Get him to get out and have fun, and let us handle home for a few hours, he need it! The more he closed himself, the grumpier he became and the more he make Moonbin miserable by snapping at him each time he tried to catch his attention!” She’s on the verge of crying now and Jaejoong reached out to hold her.
“Fine, I’ll talk to him before we leave. So don’t cry, we’re going to have a party out there. Moonbin will start asking question if you get out there with red eyes. Okay?” he squeezed her in reassuring embrace.
Just then, the kitchen door opened up with Changmin shouting, “JiHye, what took you so long with the sa-“ he stopped talking when he saw his wife in Jaejoong’s embrace.
The man mouthed him, ‘we’ll be there’, so he just nodded in understanding. ‘She must’ve been waiting to talk to him’ he thought as he closed the door.
JiHye pulled herself off and said, “I guess it’s time to start the party. Thank you Oppa, sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I just needed to let it out… you can forget about it, I shouldn’t have asked.”
“Hey,” he caught her arms. “Thanks for confiding in me. I’m not uncomfortable, I promise you that I’ll talk to him.” He kissed her forehead and took the salad bowl.
“Let me bring this, you get the paper plates for the cake, I’m sure the kid won’t eat much of the dinner and will go straight for the cake!”
JiHye felt so relieved and she could finally laugh freely tonight. She was sure that she made the right decision to talk to Jaejoong. ‘How I wish that he’s belongs to this household’ was what on her mind as she watched Jaejoong’s back in front of her.
* * * * *
After singing happy birthday and dinner -- in which Jaejoong managed to persuade the birthday boy to eat some grilled chicken and mashed potato before the birthday cake; everyone was enjoying coffee at the living room. They had a good time and were happy to see Moonbin running around, laughing and excited with all the presents that he received tonight. Especially the one from his ‘Jejussi & Chun-ahjussi’.
Seeing his interest in drawing and coloring, Jaejoong bought him a painting set with an adjustable easel. He accidentally found it when he was browsing the bookstore. Initially he was looking for some children’s book but he saw the easel in the craft section. The 50 water colors were placed in a two storey wooden box and claimed to be toxic-free and safe for children. The easel also came in a set with a plastic little stool with which Moonbin could choose to sit or step on it to paint or draw. As for the media, he bought a tube of papers that’s already cut to fit the size of the easel. He’s glad to see that the little boy loved his present.
“Jaejoong-ah, thank you for the great present for Binnie! It must be expensive, you shouldn’t have to.” Yunho’s father told him as he put his right arm around Jaejoong.
“No, it’s not that expensive Appa. As long as he’s happy with it than it’s worth the price.” he replied to the old man.
“Still, you can’t fool me. I have an eye for good stuff you know.”
“Never doubt it. How have you been Appa?” he turned his head to him.
“Never been better! For an old man like me, it’s a privilege to have my children and grandchildren living under one roof with me and your Umma. Things couldn’t be better than this. Well, if only Min Young is a healthy baby…” he sighed and put his arms back to his side.
“Appa, she’ll get better. It’s been 6 months and she hasn’t had anything serious, has she? She’s strong girl and she has Yunho to watch over her. And you too.”
He gave Jaejoong a gentle smile, “I really wish she will… Moonbin really loves her you know. He’s so excited to have a sister, too bad that Yunho is over protective towards her that he wouldn’t let him spend more time with his little sister. But who can blame him? It’s already a miracle that she’s here with us today.”
The older Jung gazed at the little crib across the room. After some nagging from him and his wife -- plus Moonbin, Yunho finally let Min Young joined the crowd downstairs. But Jaejoong could see that he didn’t let his eyes away from her for more than 5 minutes. But right now, his son is whining at him to carry him in on his shoulder around the living room.
“Appa, please! I want to touch the origami that Min-hyung hang in up there! Please, Appa!” The little boy kept jumping and stomping his feet in front of his father.
It’s clear that Yunho felt a bit annoyed but finally he relented and lifted up the boy who squealed happily once he was up on his shoulder.
‘Appa, the crane! Let me touch the crane! The duck- I want to touch the duck! Min-hyung why is the duck green? Duck is yellow!’ he kept shouting and giggling excitedly. That invited a wide smile on the adults’ face; they could see that Moonbin was ecstatic.
It was a perfect party… or almost… Until suddenly JiHye who came to feed Min Young her milk went pale and screamed.
“Oh my God, Oppa!! Come here quick! Min Young, she’s- she’s- why is she turning blue!” She cried out and she was shaking beside the crib.
There was silence only for a second before Yunho quickly put Moonbin down and ran to his daughter’s crib. As soon as he looked inside, JiHye was right. The pale skin was turning blue and she didn’t seem to breathe at all.
He yelled at Kibum to get the driver and the car ready; and at his parents to call the hospital and pediatrician to standby to receive Min Young in NICU. JiHye was crying hysterically in shock as Changmin was trying to calm her down. Yunho’s mom wasn’t better; she couldn’t even stand and just gave Yoochun the hospital’s number that’s written on the emergency list by the side table. Yunho’s father was already on the phone with Min Young’s doctor.
In the middle of the commotion, no one paid attention to the little birthday boy who stood next to his birthday cake, overwhelmed by the sudden rush around him. He didn’t understand what happened with his little sister and he’s curious. His ‘Gamma’ was crying on the sofa, ‘Gappa’ was talking on the phone and so was Chun-ahjussi. JiHye-noona was crying and Changmin-hyung was holding her. He couldn’t see Jejussi. His Appa was holding little Min Young and didn’t say anything, so maybe he could ask him.
He came closer and tugged on his father’s pants, “Appa… “ he didn’t even glance at him. Maybe he didn’t hear him. So he tugged harder, “Appa! Appa!!” he stomped on his little feet to get his father’s attention.
Suddenly Yunho’s voice boomed around the hectic room, “Moonbin stop it!! Your little sister is sick, can’t you see! So stop your whining and go sit with Grandma!”
For a moment no one made a sound as the little boy slowly let go of his father’s pants. He looked at the floor as he spoke softly, “I’m sorry…”
* * * * *
As Kibum was trying to find where the driver is, Jaejoong was outside to turn on the car’s ignition -- the key was still hanging in the same place; so as soon as the driver was found Yunho could leave to the hospital.
He left the car to warm up and was opening the front door when he heard Yunho’s loud voice to Moonbin. His heart stopped. ‘Oh no, not on his birthday.’ He took another three steps inside and was able to hear the little boy’s soft ‘I’m sorry’ to his father.
No one moved, as if expecting to see what the father’s going to do to his son. Yunho’s seemed to realize his mistake and tried to calm down, “Look, Binnie, Appa is not mad at you, just-“
Suddenly the child’s tear-gate broke as he cried loudly, screaming; “I’M SORRY, I’M SORRY! APPA DON’T BE MAD, BINNIE’S SORRY!”
Jaejoong ran and lifted him up, away from his father. His anger boiled seeing how Yunho was treating Moonbin. By then, the child was in hysterics as he was trashing in Jaejoong’s arms, still screaming, “SORRY, BINNIE’S SORRY! BINNIE WILL BE A GOOD BOY!! UMMA SORRY! APPA SORRY!” He cried so hard that his face turned all red and Jaejoong could see his tiny veins popping in his neck. This was bad, the fact that he was even mentioning his dead mother meant something snapped inside him, something that he had tried to keep hidden in his heart.
Kibum who didn’t see anything was stunned when he came inside to announce that the car was ready; everyone had a different expression on their faces, but whatever happened it wasn’t good. Especially not with Moonbin.
As he was running to the door with his daughter, Yunho stopped in front of Jaejoong and shot him a pleading look as he whispered; “Please…”
But Yunho’s father already outside, calling: ‘Yunho come on, Min Young’s doctor already sent an ambulance so we will meet them halfway to get them give the first help for her!’
Yunho looked at his crying son with regret and turned around to catch up with his father. His mother was also trying to keep up with him behind.
Jaejoong didn’t say anything but he was grateful that Yoochun was now standing behind him and helped to keep Moonbin steady in his embrace by putting his arms around them both. He kept running circles on the child’s back and kissing him over and over, telling him how much he loves him.
He didn’t know how long Moonbin was in a fit, he didn’t even realize that he was also crying with the boy until he felt Yoochun’s palm on his forehead, “Are you okay Babe? Just lean on me, you both are tired.”
He opened his eyes and saw that Moonbin now had his eyes closed but he was still hiccupping. His face was still red and when Jaejoong touched it the skin felt hot. He was running a fever and he started to get panic, “Oh gosh Chun, he’s burning up! What do we do, oh no!” Jaejoong cried again.
Yoochun kept his cool, “Sssh, stop crying. He must be exhausted with the crying fit and the fever might be the effect of the emotional toll. Let’s get his stuff ready so we could go home and keep an eye on him. Hmm?” he softly told him. He nodded and sat at the sofa, still rocking the little boy in his arms.
His lover then walked over to Changmin, “Min, could you please ask JiHye where Binnie’s stuff is? You know that it’s been decided that’ he’s staying with Jaejoong for a few days, right?”
Changmin nodded, “I know. Let me get them Hyung, give me a few minutes.” And he jumped the stairs 3 steps at a time to get to the second floor.
Meanwhile, Yoochun returned to the other man with a sleeping child in his arms. If Moonbin looked terrible, Jaejoong was no better. He didn’t stop rubbing Moonbin’s back and glued his lips on his forehead.
“Changmin is getting Binnie’s stuff. We’re leaving shortly.” He looked around at the maids who were starting to clean up and asked one of them to pack some of the birthday cake to bring with them. “It’s not a complete birthday without a birthday cake the day after, don’t you think?” he smiled at him.
Changmin and JiHye came down with Moonbin’s luggage. JiHye was holding his blanket.
“Oppa, use this to keep him warm in the car.” She wrapped the blanket around her sleeping nephew. “I’ve also asked the maids to pack some food so you don’t have to get up early and cook for him tomorrow morning.”
Jaejoong thanked her and stood up. Yoochun took the luggage from Changmin and the large bag with containers of food and the birthday cake inside. Both Changmin & JiHye hugged them outside before they got into Yoochun’s car.
Before he got in, he turned around once again to face JiHye, “Keep me updated with Min Young’s condition, will you? Call me once Umma and Appa got home, no matter what time it is. Promise?”
JiHye nodded, “If I’m still up then I’ll call. If not then once I get up and talk with them I’ll ring you.”
“We’ll drop by your place tomorrow. I think it’s better to bring Binnie’s presents to your place while he’s there.” Changmin followed.
Jaejoong smiled tiredly at them, “Sure, I’ll be waiting. So see you.” He got into the passenger’s seat and Yoochun helped him put on the seatbelt.
JiHye knocked on his window, “Oppa, thank you so much. For… everything.”
Jaejoong retorted, “Hey, what did I tell you? We’re family, so don’t bother okay. You have a rest too, I love you.”
“We love you too Hyung,” it’s Changmin replied to him.
As Yoochun drove out of the mansion, Jaejoong kept looking outside the window and contemplating about what he’s going to do with Moonbin. What happened back there was not something that should be taken lightly. The emotional outburst shocked him, the boy needed help. And he could feel a headache coming when he felt Yoochun’s fingers caressing his cheeks.
“Sleep. I’ll wake you up when we get home.”
And that’s what he did. He kissed the boy once again before he closed his eyes and rested his head on the cushion. What a birthday it had been.
