Chapter 6

BANG!

The door to the main office was opened with a slam. Everybody jumped on their seats, surprised. There was a man in a winter jacket and a beanie who stomped his way to the CEO’s door.

‘Bam! Bam!’ he knocked the door loudly (or more like pounding on it) and pushed the knob without waiting to hear any reply.

The moment it was opened, Park Yoochun greeted him without taking his eyes off his the computer screen, “Hello, Jaejoong… done abusing my office doors? Your outfit seemed warm enough but why is your face so red?”

The said man took off his beanie unceremoniously and stood before him while panting as if he was trying to hold back his emotion, “Tell me again why did you think Lee Joon fit to be the Leader of the group? And why did I have to be the one who babysit the kids? Yoochun, I’ve had enough with Lee Joon’s pranks for the past 2 years!! I’m sure there’s someone who doesn’t mind to be their manager now!”

“Oh, what did he do this time now? Catch your breath and sit down will you,” he replied calmly, knowing that the man was just upset & not actually angry.

They stared at each other for a few seconds until Jaejoong huffed & finally pulled a seat closer to Yoochun’s desk & sit on it.

“Well?” Yoochun waited for his explanation.

“Mmmmph...” Jaejoong slumped on his seat suddenly like losing his will to fight with his CEO. “He pretended to be sick at the set and made everyone played along with him. I was so panicked to see his blue face that I just ran to get the crew to call an ambulance and someone who could check up on him first. Then he locked the door from inside so nobody could get it. The other boys didn’t see where he hid the key and finally called me to get in from the bathroom window. It was so small that I got stuck halfway in there, freezing my ass off and being the laughing stock of the whole crew who were curious enough to try to find out why I kept shouting & pounding on the door of the supposed to be sick Lee Joon and in the end saw me hanging halfway on the bathroom window!! Now tell me again why you still want me there?” his voice raised word by word.

Yoochun couldn’t help not to laugh himself off until he got teary eyed and met with Jaejoong’s cold stare. “Hey, you do realize that it’s funny don’t you? I mean… you, being stuck and all? Hahahahaha…”

“Oh, I’m glad that you find it hilarious, Yoochun-ssi. But you maybe forget that it’s December and winter nevertheless? I ran out in panic without my jacket and stood outside their door for 10 minutes in the freezing wind! And if you found being stuck in the bathroom window as funny, then like I said, you can find a new manager for them starting tomorrow. I quit!”

Yoochun watched him amusedly. Jaejoong had changed so much during the past 2 years. The old Jaejoong wouldn’t show such emotion no matter what pranks you played on him, he was such a pro in hiding what he felt. Until that night in October when his 3 year relationship with Jung Yunho ended abruptly and brought him staying in the dorm ever since.

“You really wanna quit? They loved you like their own brother you know. I have to admit that Lee Joon was way out of line this time and I’ll make sure to have a serious talk with him. But you know it’s not easy to get them a new manager when they’re a month away in releasing their 2nd album. Things will be hectic again for them, a new person will make them uncomfortable & I’m afraid no one is ready to take over everything from you. With all the schedules & the-”

Jaejoong held up his right hand to stop Yoochun’s talk, “I know, I know!”, he sighed, “I know that very well, but it’s just too much for me at this moment. Other than handling their promotion schedules, the hardest part for me is actually dealing with a bunch of 16-17 year olds with raging hormones! Did I tell you about the incident when Mir used my phone last month? He said that he needed to send a message to his sister and asked for a permission to use mine, since you applied this no mobiles policy. And guess what I got the next day?? My heart almost stopped when a picture message came in and I saw that cute girl from the other management’s girl group in her underwear sending kisses for Mir! He’s only 16 for god’s sake!”

“Let me ask you again? You really wanna quit in this important moment for them? They’ll be devastated that their trusted Hyung doesn’t want to take care of them anymore.”

“Well, maybe not now. I want them to get through the promotion first and maybe after that you can consider another job for me. I need a breather.”

“Or maybe you just need to find someone, go on a date for a change… maybe that’s what you need.” He said it carefully and saw that Jaejoong’s body went rigid for a second. “It’s been two years… I thought you got over it already.”

Jaejoong didn’t say anything. He stood up, “I gotta get back to the dorm now. Let’s talk about a new manager again when you’re not busy & they boys are on their day off. Talk to you later,” he started to walk to the door.

“Are we finished talking now?”

The man paused and spoke without turning, “As far as I'm concern, yes we are. See you.” and Yoochun’s door closed with a click.

The 30 year old CEO leaned on his chair, looking up the ceiling. He did that again. It’s not that he wanted to push Jaejoong to start a new life or anything, but he sincerely hoped that Jaejoong can happy again with someone. He could never forget that night when he started living in the trainee’s dorm. What bothered him at that time was that while telling him what really happened between him & Yunho, his face didn’t show any sign of disappointment or sadness. It was so cold & expressionless. He spoke like someone telling a story from the newspaper, he didn’t even shed a tear and composed the same manner for another half a year. Not opening up to anybody.

Yoochun managed to find another guy to be Yunho’s manager the next day. He was as good as Jaejoong and actually worked for a rival company. He was on unpaid leave for 2 months for taking care of his baby daughter while his wife recovered from dengue fever. When he returned he found out the company had replaced him for good. Another manager who pitied him contacted Yoochun, knowing that he’s looking for someone to care for his new boy group on their way to debut in April. He hired him for Yunho instead. The media found out & asked him hundreds of questions of why Kim Jaejoong suddenly being replaced after working perfectly as a team with Jung Yunho. He told them that he’s not in good health and needed to rest for while. Of course they didn’t trust him but he didn’t explain anything more & left it at that.

As for Jaejoong, since he was living in the dorm until he could find his own place, Yoochun assigned him to help taking care of the boys who were around 13 & 14 at that time until he could find the right person for the job. The boys hated him, saying that he’s too cold, couldn’t take a joke & scared them with his silence. He changed about a month before their debut. He became tolerate, listened more to them & in the end the boys loved him to death & wouldn’t want another person to be their manager. If only they knew what made the change in him… He was glad but still… he hoped something better for the cause.

In the next 6 months since his break up Jaejoong never said anything about Yunho, he didn’t even ask if he got along well his manager. Fortunately Yunho hardly showed up in the office as his schedule mostly shooting in a location and Jaejoong had to keep up his boys’ training schedule and spent most of his time in the studio so they managed to not seeing each other at all. Until one Saturday morning in March, Jaejoong was coming to see him in the office to discuss the boys’ progress according Jaejoong’s obesrvation. It was part of his job as the CEO of a management company to follow the entertainment news every Saturday, too see if his artists made good news or created gossips as well, thus let the TV on in his room. Suddenly a breaking news was heard. Jung Yunho was marrying his childhood friend, the actress Han Soon Mi, in April,. The TV showed a picture of them getting out of the hospital. Yunho’s face was stiff while he was holding Soon Mi’s hand whose face was hidden in his shoulder. The media speculated that after her medication they realized that they belong to each other before it’s too late. Another said that Soon Mi’s already 3 weeks pregnant, hence the decision was made.

He remembered how silent Jaejoong became. His hands were shaking tremendously. That’s when Yoochun realized that he failed in his effort to hold back his tears that’s falling on his cheeks to his own lap. He approached the man, held his hand and told him to let it out. For the first time after the separation, Jaejoong was crying like a baby, sobbing, hiccupping on his seat while still holding his hand tightly. He couldn’t help not to reach out & held him in his embrace. He cried harder into his shirt, Yoochun could feel the helplessness & loneliness sipping out through the tears he cried. When he finally felt him not moving anymore, he pulled out and looked into his eyes.

The first thing that came out from his mouth was, “So it’s really over now. I’m glad it’s over… now it feels so real.”

Yoochun hugged him again tightly, afraid that he would fall if he didn’t. Jaejoong whispered softly, “Let me stay at the dorm. Let me be the boys’ real manager. Let me move on.” He only nodded at his request. He gave him a day off the next day. When he dropped by the training room a week later he found Jaejoong with a short hair (he didn’t even had a haircut since the break up), laughing & playing jokes with the boys. He almost couldn’t recognize him so he asked, “What happened?”

He sported a big smile, “I guess I moved on. Like the new me?”

“Yeah, very much. That’s a cool hair cut by the way.”

The boys suddenly bombarded him with so many questions, “Yoochun ahjussi, you’re not going to change our manager now, are you?”, “Please let him stay, please, please, please!” “Yeah, we don’t want anyone but Jaejoong-hyung, let him stay!” Yoochun was overwhelmed, a grin showed on his face while trying to meet Jaejoong’s eyes.

“Of course. Who says I’m going to give you boys a new manager?” He replied.

The boys cheered & hugged the said manager until he fell off his chair and they all became a pile on the hardwood floor. Yoochun almost couldn’t believe that he would be able to witness such a carefree Jaejoong. He changed indeed, and into a better one much to his satisfaction. I guess he really moved on. And he stayed as the boys’ manager until today. He couldn’t have found anyone more suitable for the job.

Jaejoong dragged his body to his own room after checking that the boys already in their bed. They sure were, it’s almost 2am and they’d been recording their new album continued with practicing the dance for the promotion until late at night. Even he fell asleep in the van until the driver woke him up when they reached the dorm. It was hard to wake the boys up, they literally sleepwalking to the elevator and to their beds. They didn’t even change their clothes, but he let them.

His room was just 1 level above; Yoochun merged 2 trainee units to give him a bigger space when he said he’s staying. He opted the stairs to keep him awake. He punched his door code and got in where it’s much warmer. He didn’t turn on the lights in the living room, just the reading lamp on the side table and threw himself on the couch. Too tired to move he thought maybe he should just sleep here. He saw the light blinking on the phone, there’s a message. He punched the light and the machine informed him that he had 1 message on his phone. As he continued to hear, JiHye’s voice filled in the room.

“Oppa, where have you been! I’ve been trying to call your mobile 4 times but didn’t get through! Did you turn it off?” he checked his mobile in his pocket, apparently he forgot to turn it on again after the recording. When he turned it on there really was 4 missed calls from JiHye’s number and another 2 from the office. “Anyway, can we meet? I miss you so much and… I want you to meet someone.” He can almost see her smile in the tone.

“Errm, let me know when you can meet. Send me a message as soon as you hear this message, okay! No matter what time! Miss you Oppa and see you soon!” she ended the message cheerfully. He sent her a message right after, telling her that he had a day off today so she should come for lunch at his place since he’s too reluctant to go out in the cold wind. After he hit the sent button he stayed on the couch.

As promised, he kept in touch with JiHye. There’s no denying that he loved her like a real sister. JiHye kept her promise too for not mentioning his brother’s name when she’s with Jaejoong including of the wedding news. He could see that she’s trying hard in holding back. As if fate was being kind, Yunho’s wedding was exactly the same day of his boys’ debut that provided him a valid reason for not showing up at the party even though Yoochun said he should, out of good intention as part of the same management. He didn’t care much about the gossips anymore, it would die down after the wedding anyway. So when they bid goodbye, even though JiHye in the end didn’t say a thing, he still told her that he’s tight on that day for the boys’ debut. JiHye thanked him before kissing his cheek.

No matter how hurt he was in the past, he chose not to let it get on to him, it’s been two years but somehow I felt like only 2 weeks. He didn’t’ want to think further and went to his bedroom to get changed before bed. Oddly, it was Yunho’s face that was on his mind before he drifted in dreamland. He didn’t dream of him but still felt a tug in his heart when he woke up in the morning. It made him wonder if he would hear about him later.

Yunho went straight home after recording the Late Night Show. The first talk show after his marriage with Soon Mi. Truthfuly, he didn’t even understand why he was invited considering he didn’t star in many movies for the past 2 years. Or maybe his fans just missed him. For whatever reason, he could careless, he just couldn’t wait to see his 13 months old boy again.

It was already close to midnight by the time he entered the gate. He & Soon Mi were still living with his parents. They now occupied the pavilion which had been renovated to accommodate a baby room & a bigger living room. His parents also changed the wallpaper & the whole furniture to make Soon Mi more comfortable. Or in his opinion, to rid of Jaejoong’s presence in that place. He didn’t complain, it’s better for him too.

As he was getting closer to the front door, he could slightly hear Moonbin’s crying & wailing from the top of his lungs. He frowned, Moonbin was supposed to be sleeping at this hour. And didn’t his wife hear the baby? He was half running & went straight to Moonbin’s room next to their own. His baby was standing on his crib, screaming with a red face while holding the bars on his crib tightly. Yunho quickly hold him up in his arms and felt his wet pants. Oh, time for diaper change. He did that expertly in no time and changed the crib’s sheets as well. Moonbin’s still sobbing pitily on this arms as he walked to his bedroom to find his wife. She wasn’t there. But he saw the bathroom’s light on. When he opened it, he was greeted with the sight of his wife’s body in the tub, completely naked & lying helplessly, water still running from the tap to the floor.

“Oh God! Soon Mi, what have you done again this time!” He turned the water tap, pulled the water plug and felt her skin’s as cold as an ice cube; her lips started to turn blue too. He did all that while still holding his son. It’s in the middle of winter but why did she filled the tub with cold water? He ran to the kitchen and rang the main house through the intercom. He told the new butler to wake up his parents & come to the pavilion. And call the family’s doctor too. NOW.

He wasted no time to ran back to the bedroom and put Moonbin - who miraculously had fallen asleep in his arms, on his bed. He then took some towels from the closet and wrapped his wife on them before the carried him to the bedroom and put her next to his son. By the time his parents got there, he had made the room warmer for Soon Mi and her mother took Moonbin from the bed and put him in his crib. One look from his father, he knew that it’s gonna be another struggle in his marriage life. And he wondered if she’s really worth letting go of Jaejoong. He shook his head in denial, remembering his little angel in the next room. He wouldn’t have had him if not because of Soon Mi. Life is such a contradiction for him.
