Chapter 3
Jaejoong - age 18, Return to a broken promise
Has it really been a year? It feels more like a century...
Maybe it's true what people always say... When you want to leave something behind, don't ever look back 'cause it'll always bring you regrets.
3 years ago he walked away, left everything that was once precious to him but also a painful memory and a promise that he couldn’t keep.
His mother said he should started anew, a fresh page to write on, a new memory to create. But he knew he could never run away from the past that tainted him. He's screwed (literally) and nothing would change what's done.
Just why did his mother think that she would be able to change their lives was beyond belief.
He tried hard to hate her, really tried... in the end blood is thicker than water, the love that he felt for her was still greater. After all, she was- is a good mother. She just happened to pick the wrong guy to marry for a few years.
Running away from the town and the people he loved wasn't an answer... this new town wasn't better either. His handsome city look made girls obsessed with him. And when they do, they would find a way to 'get to know him better' or in another word to dig and try to find out if there's any dirt behind the perfect face and life that their family created. A loving single mother who worked hard for her children, a handsome and reliable oldest son and a cute brother that made people went 'aaawww' with a pinch on the cheek. Once they found out, he's back being a whore, a slut of whatever names they're calling him for the scars that he bore.
Still, he was okay... 'Cause he wasn't worth for the one that he loved most anymore. He broke their promise; he had nothing to offer anymore. And he learned to forget it. Until his mother took him back there.
For 2 years he left everything behind and thought that maybe he could be someone else. And it took only one visit and look at him to make his world crashed and the guilt to rise up again.
Would he be okay if he stayed?
Would he be lying at the hospital at all if he was there?
Just that one look... a few minutes spent looking at the face of someone that he cherished more than his life.
He wished his mother didn't take him back. He didn't care about his inheritance. He didn't need it.
"Jae-hyung..."
He called his name. He called him hyung. And the memory came rushing back to him like a current...
"I want to grow up and protect you."
He laughed, "If there's anyone needs protection, that would be you! You're so skinny I'm afraid that you'll get bullied!"
A pout. "I'm not skinny! You'll see! I'll grow up and take you away from your house! We can live together and then I'll-"
He doubled over in his laughter, "Omygod Yunho! Keep on dreaming!"
"Why won't you believe me?? I will!"
"Nah, I won't believe you until you gain another few kilos or being taller than me..." he winked.
"Gaaah! Whatever, I hate you!" He threw himself on the bed. "Really?" He asked him after a few minutes of silence.
"Huh?" He questioned, "What are you asking?"
"Will you really protect me if I'm being bullied?"
"Of course, I will! I won't just sit around to see you being miserable! You're like a brother to me, Yunho, you're as important as Junsu to me." He smiled at him but the boy didn't smile back. "What's with the face?"
"Oh. Just a brother?" His heart skipped a beat. "Hyung... can't two guys be together?"
The question was unexpected. He wanted to laugh again but Yunho gave him a serious expression, so it's just right that he replied with the same seriousness.
"Do you want to be together with me?"
Yunho nodded slowly. "You're only 13, how do you know that you want to be with me and not a girl? You don't know anything about love, Yunho-yah."
"I know that I like you."
The words were said with such determination and for the first time in his life he saw something that maybe he could call love in a pair of eyes stared back at him.
Out of curiosity he reached out and kissed the boy full on the lips, and his eyes widened before him. But he didn't move, he let him tasted the first seed of sin. And somehow to his surprise, the boy wasn't the only one left breathless after the kiss.
He sighed and hugged him, Yunho quickly wrapped his arms around his body.
"Do you still like me? Even after I did that to you?"
"I- I still like you. I love you hyung..."
He pulled off and they both had this silly grin decorating their faces. "Ok... I like you too. Ah, I'm wrong... I love you too."
"And hyung... I read in a magazine that when two people love each other they will have sex."
Jaejoong almost got choked by his saliva, "Wha- wow, Yunho! We kissed and now sex?"
"But that's what I read!"
"Okay, okay, and then what?" He tried to suppress his laughter.
"It said that we should save the best for the right person. The first time, that is... it's supposed to be the best."
"And you want me to be your first?"
"Mmm, you're older, but I want me to be your first too. Can you promise? You'll be 18 first, but I can't do those things at least until I'm 18, promise me?"
He smiled as he caressed the boy's cheeks lovingly. "I promise."
And he broke the promise 3 months later. No one else could be his first. He lost his best, he's only a left over. He's not worth of anyone's love.
Just that one look... and the way he called his name... and he spent the past year in another brokenness. He wanted to hear him calling his name again, he wanted to taste his lips again, he wanted to hold him again...
Maybe this time he knew the answer already when his mother asked him.
"Jaejoong... should we move back to the old town again? Do you like that?"

Yunho - age 16, Changmin - age 11, Family
“Yunho, can you come down for a minute, honey.”
“Sure Mom.” He put down his book and ran down the stairs, not forgetting to ruffled Changmin’s hair, the boy was watching a movie, leaning on his father’s leg.
“Hyung!” he complained but that just made Yunho wanted to teased him more. They ended up struggled on the couch until his father told them to sit.
“Uhm, something serious?” He asked because his mother sat beside his father and made it look like it’s going to be a serious talk.
His father looked straight at Changmin, “Changmin, do you like staying with us so far?”
There’s sunshine on the boy’s face as he replied shyly, “Yeah, I like here. I like staying here…”
“Do you like us too? Yunho? Myself and Aunt Soo Mi?”
A hard nod, “I do, I like you all. Hyung plays with me… You and aunty too, you give me so many things… I like you all.” He beamed and turned his head up at Yunho, and Yunho flicked his cheek.
His mother straightened up on her seat and his parents looked at each other before his father continued speaking.
“Say, how do you like to have a Hyung?” Changmin looked at him confusedly, “And us as your parents?”
Yunho realized quickly what his parents were speaking of. “Mom, Dad… are you saying that you’re adopting Changmin?”
“Well… that depends if Changmin wants to be our family. Since I have your guardianship, you’ve been allowed to stay with us, but now I-“ he cleared his throat, “Your mother and I, we want him to be our son, to be your brother.” He stared back at Changmin who was gapping on the carpeted floor.
Yunho was amused to see the comical expression on the boy’s face, rather overwhelmed than disbelief. And he ruffled his hair some more, “So what do you say, squirt? You can have me for yourself now!”
Silence… and Changmin still hasn’t said anything and they started to get worried.
His mother got up and approached the boy, she touched his shoulder, “Changminnie…”
In a second her hands were full with a sobbing 11 year old who kept telling her in between his tears, “Okay! Okay!”
Yunho and his father let out a breath that they didn’t realize they held and started laughing at each other, watching closely how the boy held his new mother tightly and drowned himself on her bosom.
After the emotional tears died down, the first thing that he asked was, “So I get to call you Mom and Dad like Hyung, now?”
They nodded.
“And I can stay here all my life?”
His father laugh, “Well, you might want to leave when you’re older, but for now yes, you can stay here for as long as you want to.”
Changmin smiled wider and shyly asked, “And- uhm… and my name is Jung Changmin now?”
Jung Soo Mi wiped the tear streaked cheeks with her hands, “It’s going to take a few days, but before the end of the week… you ARE going to be Jung Changmin.”
Some more tears… until Yunho’s stomach protested for the lack of food intake, it’s 7pm already. So he hauled the boy on his feet, “Come on squirt, let’s get you cleaned up from the snots so Mom can prepare dinner while you change.”
He pulled Changmin towards the his bedroom, the boys was too happy and ran on his own to get changed. But his mother called him again.
“What’s up?”
“Jaejoong is moving back here.”
His world froze. “He- he’s moving back?”
“The whole family, with Jaejoong and Junsu. In Young called me this morning… she said that he agreed and asked me to talk to you. Be his friend again… he had been through so much for the past 3 years.”
He nodded, “Yeah, of course I will…” There’s so much that he wanted to ask his mother but she then told him to keep going.
“Make sure that Changmin really wash up, I promise we’ll talk more about it later. Kay, baby?”
“Yes Mom.”
And his mind was once again filled with questions that hadn’t been answered.
Will he get his answers now?
He’s so looking forward to welcoming the Kims back in town.
