Eames and Arthur meet as young soldier and young hitman, spending several months together before Arthur must leave for a job, since Eames is being threatened as collateral. Feeling abandoned, Eames turns to drinking and fucking, until he is told to shape up or ship out. He shapes up, eventually ending up in the SAS and the dreamshare program. Later, as a thief, he encounters Arthur, and believes he lefts him for his job, hurt.
It isn't until after Inception that he wants to pursue a relationship again, and it isn't until he has to go into Arthur's mind to pull him out of a coma that he learns the real reasons behind Arthur leaving. The two of them struggle to regain trust in their relationship, still.

Instead of leaving without a word, Arthur chooses to tell Eames that he is a hitman. Eames is shocked at first, but eventually relocates in order to protect himself. Arthur meets up with Eames in India. Eames ends up learning about dreamshare from his commander, while Arthur learns from Yusuf Nejem, the natural way. Eventually they end up with a PASIV and perform their own experiments. (Which ends up with them in Limbo, for a while, though they are able to free themselves.)

Eames and Arthur meet as 18-year-olds. Eames is a recently-released delinquent immigrant, and Arthur is working through his own issues. They meet in a fight, wherein Eames couchsurfs on Arthur's couch and eventually becomes his lover. They suffer through each other, Eames working as a hustler, and Arthur working as a waiter, before getting picked up by Sylvia to become hitmen together.

Epic unnamed verse is epic. Eames is a gladiator in Rome, captured from ancient Ireland, and Arthur is an ancient-Wales native who ends up as his slave. Eames is killed in the arena, only to wake back up alive. Arthur and he escape, but eventually Arthur dies. Eames tries to kill himself to join him, only to find that he can not die.
However, soul mates are soul mates, and as Arthur is reincarnated throughout the ages, Eames always follows him, drawn to him or looking for him, over two thousand years. Arthur's soul reappears with more frequency until Eames encounters him in the dream-thief industry.

Eames is a World and US History teacher at an american school, where he runs into Arthur Morgan, a young and curious student. There is an obvious attraction, but neither attempt to do anything about it. Especially not after Arthur is sexually assaulted at the school (and Eames discovers and puts a stop to it). Eames ends up finding Arthur's absent biological mother in the traumatized silence that follows, and bringing her to him in an attempt to help him.
Romance does not occur until Arthur has graduated, though.

Several AU's are in this verse - one where Arthur has Rogue-like powers and cannot touch him, another where Arthur is a fire mutant who cannot touch anyone but Eames and his own brother for fear of burning them.

Lizzie Eames is Eames' daughter, born when he was a young man. In one verse, Lizzie is killed in a car wreck, and right after Eames finds out that Arthur is a hitman, and blames him for Lizzie's death until he is told otherwise (since employers of Arthur's were threatening Eames and Lizzie.) Eames ends up going with Arthur and becoming a thief, never quite dealing with the trauma of losing his daughter.
In another verse, Lizzie is alive and well; Arthur and Eames only met once for a one-night-stand when they were younger. Arthur is very disproving of Eames “teaching method” for his teenage daughter, especially when he takes her to 'work'.
