Follow up to my last post--Shopping for real food.

Well, yesterday was shopping day and I tried to put some of the basic premises of Pollan's book to work as I gathered edible things for the family--hoping to acquire more food than imitation food as I shopped at our huge discount coop named Woodman's here in Madison ( Read more... )

you haven't shopped for groceries with me--i've been a big label reader for many years.

the inability to get good bread in a grocery has driven me to the Farmers Market and Willy St. Co-op, as well as the Silly Yak bakery whenever i'm in the neighborhood. the downside is i can't do the one-stop-shop trip like you just did.

i'm also taking baking lessons from my dear grandma. i'm getting the hang of making my own bread from scratch; the trick is finding the time to do it. i might be able to make it a sunday morning ritual, so long as i can keep my kitchen counters clear enough!

for grocery store bread, try Natural Ovens of Manitowoc. it's not bad. i have a book written by the late Paul Stitt who started the business called "Fighting the Food Giants". he used to work for big companies like Quaker Oats and was disgusted by what they would do to a perfectly good grain. you might want to borrow it from me.

the ingredient list on any brand of flour tortilla is appalling. i mean holy crap. i now use corn when it works in the dish and hopefully i can teach myself to make my own flour ones someday. see my Facebook for a recipe, if you're curious.

try Herdez Salsa Casera rather than Pace sometime--tomatoes, onions, serrano peppers, iodized salt and cilantro. it's got a waterier consistency but it's not using anything pureed. i swear by the stuff.

I don't know if I can switch from Pace Picante Hot as it's my absolute favorite flavor and consistency.
There are just a couple of quasi foods I am unwilling to part with. The other one is the bolthouse mocha shakes I take my handful of vitamins and supplements with. I did think they were soy but now I know they are not. Guess I'll be looking for another mocha type shake.
We'll also be getting a bread machine again like we used to have. It doesn't take much time to put all the ingredients in and it does the kneading work for you.
I really miss our home made bread.
