Bearing in mind LJ formatting is a pain...

Both have benefits, obviously. I seem to get more feedback when it's posted to LJ (and I can take the not-review-whore route all I like, I do like feedback.) I find ff.n way easier, since I have to go back and reformat everything for LJ, and momma loves her italics. Is there a special way to post to rich text that I'm missing? "The Rich Text editor requires JavaScript, and does not work with some web browsers (such as Opera or Safari). You may be able to use the Rich Text editor by upgrading your browser to the latest version and making sure that JavaScript is enabled. Otherwise, you will either need to use the HTML editor, update your journal using a different browser, or use a downloadable client with similar Rich Text features.

If you paste an entry from an external application (such as a word processing program) into the Rich Text Editor, the Rich Text Editor will automatically insert HTML markup to preserve the formatting. To avoid this, you can switch to the HTML editor before you paste your text into the entry (this will remove all the tags and formatting that would have been inserted with the text), or switch to it afterward (this will show the tags and will let you remove the ones you don't want).

Note that pasting from some applications will sometimes add characters that are not UTF-8 and cause error messages or incorrect characters."

This came from the LJ FAQ about Rich Text Editor. I'm not familiar with using it, so I don't know if this answers any of your issues with it.

Despite the nuisance factor of LJ, its service is more reliable than that of FF.net which is frequently inaccessible, plus their search function dies regularly and the ads suck. I don't like commenting over there, as the setup is not conducive to discussion like LJ.

Even with the formatting drawbacks of LJ, I think it the pain might be worth it as I suspect you'll garner more feedback from a wider range of readership.

I don't think LJ has a word limit on actual posts, only on the comments.
