While walking on the elliptical these past couple of weeks, I've been catching up with Heroes. I just made it through season 3. I'm trying to decide if I want to watch season 4 from my computer or just wait until it comes out and snag a copy for my collection*.
This of course has spawned Heroes dreams, which
koed has encouraged me to write up and share. Since it's my (and everyone else's) favorite GM in the whole world making such a request, how can I possibly say no?
Let me preface this with 1)I have not been an RPGer for near as long as some of my compatriots, so character creation is by no means my strong point, 2)yes, I'm sure these are not novel ideas when compared to the litany of RPGs, comics, movies, etc. that exist out there, and 3)yes, if word of my ideas sparked a call that would somehow get me closer to meeting and later
acting out a sex (and/or death) scene with Zachary Quinto, you bet I'm going to pimp it.
** Contains minor spoilers from season 3
I have always been fascinated with so-called Watcher groups that you find throughout stories involving more-than-human characters (see: Joe Dawson in
Highlander and The Observer in
Fringe). So it's no wonder that I dreamed up a Watcher concept for Heroes.
The watcher has the same type of ability as everyone else when put under a microscope, however, no one would ever look at this person for an ability in the first place. They go sight unseen where the world of abilities is concerned (this makes for plausible plot points regarding why you've never seen nor paid attention to them before). This person is immune to all other abilities. If you try to pick this person up and fly with them, you aren't going anywhere. If you try to set the person on fire or freeze them, guess again. If you pretend to be someone you are not, this person sees both your persona and you. A watcher knows when you are using your ability(ies) and can see right through it.
The concept would have to be stretched a bit for say watching a speedster or a time stopper. The watcher would experience that moment on two levels - the level of everybody else, and the level of the person with the ability. It would be like putting two slides together and holding them up to the light, only one keeps flipping between frames while the other stays relatively the same until they both catch up to each other, and the watcher would have knowledge of both.
The watcher would always seem to be at the right place at the right time, and therefore able to witness others with abilities. This would follow along with the whole Godsend concept running within the show, while adding depth to the watcher character overall.
Then we come upon Solar Eclipse Day, which is obviously a special day in the show. This day takes away everyone's abilities...except for the watcher. The watcher instead now displays all the abilities of those s/he has borne witness to. "What good will that do the watcher if the eclipse is only for a couple of hours?" Ok, so imagine you can stop time, and go back and forward in time just so long as you stick within that time frame given by the eclipse. You now have a considerably longer period of time to carry out your plans than you previously thought, provided that you've thought about your plans ahead of time.
And some watchers do. They see the good and the evil waging war, yet without an ability they are powerless to get in the game, that is, until Solar Eclipse Day. In all this time the watchers are watching the game play out and they in turn are making their plans, preparing their own paths to be set in motion when the time comes. Just like all the regular Heroes/Villains, different watchers want to play on different teams and for varied reasons. Some watchers keep a diary, so that they will know what powers to expect to have at their disposal. They also pay attention, and listen for hints of others with abilities, so that they can get within their presence specifically to watch them and add their ability to their own repertoire.
Now imagine if one of these watchers suddenly starts showing up on occasion, more specifically near and around our great villain Sylar. Of course, Sylar's not dumb, so after a few episodes he confronts the lovely lady that he keeps noticing, and he does so with his usual wave of the hand to shove her against a wall. *denied* She's still standing where she was. He tries again. ... fast forward ... They've had some conversations and she's told him about her immunity to his powers - she's also been calculating in gaining his trust and interest.
Oh look, is that Solar Eclipse Day approaching?
She follows him one more time into an empty location, but by now he's tired of her games and the novelty has worn off. Knowing he can't do it the fun way, once out of sight he resorts to grabbing and pinning her against the wall the old fashioned way, with warnings about no longer playing games with him and to tell him what she's really after. She's scratched on the forehead during the scuffle (no, not foreshadowing at all...) She's struggling a little, but only because he's choking her. *cue eclipse lighting* She calms down and smiles as her forehead heals. Her body becomes a heavy weight that Sylar can't lift and she slides to the ground. She waves her hand easily and effortlessly shoving him onto the ground. She gains her composure. "Now then, we don't really have that much time." {commercial break - grab some popcorn, a soda, and visit your local restroom}
Another hand gesture and a square-shaped blue-tinted "bubble" appears around them. "Oh, um, ... let's fix this." Mime-like motions of pushing outward coincide with the bubble growing in shape to better form-fit the room shape. "There, that's better. A little breathing room never hurt anyone."
"What is that? I thought you said you didn't have any powers?"
"That's what I like to call the Cone of Silence, although it's more like a bubble, but 'Bubble of Silence' just doesn't have the same ring to it. It's to prevent certain people from hearing us."
"Who are you preventing from hearing us?"
"The people who want to kill you. If they have a good idea of where you were last, they're probably in town at the very least. Some of them have really good hearing, as in, can hear an entire block's worth of houses at once good hearing. They can also run really fast from block to block, restart the eclipse over and over again so as to hear all of the conversations, and are willing to spend quite a bit of time combing the city looking for you."
*he's catching on*
"What do you want?"
*evil grin*
"Me? Aren't you the least bit curious what might happen when your abilities and my immunity combine in the shape of one person? You had a son in one of Peter's future visions. I know, because I saw him. A son that...well...you died for."
*pause*
"What do ya say we try a little monster creating of our own?"
tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
That was a damn fine ending to a pretty nice dream - that's all I'm saying.
*Note: The snagging of the copy of season 4 will occur no matter what, as anyone who knows my dvd collection can attest. However, I'm talking about for the here-and-now watching enjoyment.
