And then there was a huge freaking rec post.

Aug 25, 2010 01:20

Sooo, Inception.

This movie has eaten my brain. I'm sure no one is surprised.

Ariadne/Arthur is by far my poison of choice, but for my first rec, I am going with something a little different:

Motherboy and I Believe In Your Victory
Eames-centric, PG, ~550 and ~1650 words, respectively
Prompt: Judi Dench's M from James Bond is Eames' mother; This is the single most important bit of fanon to my view of this universe; the piece that has entered into my personal canon firmly and which I intend to stay there forever. Also, it's awesome.

Following that up with the second from that first link: Can You Discover?
Eames, Ariadne, Arthur; ~700 words
Prompt: Arthur likes to knit. Great characterizations, and includes a couple of lines that basically sum up my view of Ariadne and Eames' interactions.

shout when you want to get off the ride
Arthur/Ariadne, PG, ~1400 words
Just plain cute. Post-movie drunken shenanigans.

Projections
Ariadne/Arthur, M, 1800 words
Sweet and a bit sexy, absolutely feel-good.

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Arthur/Ariadne, R, 10,500 words
Another how-they-get-together fic, starts during the leadup to the Fischer job and continues in the aftermath. I really like the way she writes this world, and everyone in it, and basically once I got past the 'er, wait, wasn't her totem a bishop?' moment, it was brilliant in every other way. Plus there's a DVD commentary, which is always fun; this one has some interesting insights and promises an Arthur companion piece someday.

The City by the Sea
Ariadne/Robert, R, 10,812 words
This is a story about consequences, and responsibility. sandwich_armada recced this one to me. "I read it and thought 'Quinn would love this.'" "Will it break my heart?" I asked.
I should have known the answer, when someone reads a fic and thinks of me, is always yes.

i am the hero of this story (don't need to be saved)
Mal, Arthur; PG, ~4000 words
So I walked out of the movie thinking that the possibility that most intrigued me is that Mal was right - and when she jumped, she woke up. Dom Cobb never did. This is a story about that, and about the relationship between Mal and Arthur which is just gorgeous. I want to read a lot more stories with that starting premise, but this one is worth a look. Seriously, the Arthur-Mal dynamic in it is so… well, it's something I love a lot when you get it in White Collar, too. It appeals to me tons.

I Will Change My Ways
Ariadne/Eames, NC-17, 6000 words
Now this is some porny stuff. Just last night kaydeefalls was saying she was surprised she hadn't seen this pairing as a standalone. Here it is, and it is pretty awesome. Ariadne and Eames try on opposite genders. Dreaming is awesome for fantasy sex, yo.

Even Game
Arthur/Eames, PG, 1300 words
Now I know I am alone in all of fandom for not being that into Arthur/Eames - I think my internal view of these characters doesn't quite sync with common fanon - but this? This is WONDERFUL. They play Go. It's sexy. I approve.

walking on my skin again
Ariadne/Arthur, PG, 11,000 words
I approve of titles which get me singing songs I am very fond of. Just sayin'.
After the movie, Ariadne makes a name for herself in the business. Arthur doesn't stay in touch. It's a story about trust, and closure, and learning how to be you.

Mr. Eames' List
PG, 564 words
Okay, I dunno if all y'all are familiar with Skippy's List, but you should be, and if we've ever met you must know I am all over that crap like white on rice. This is the Eames version of that list. Because of course there needs to be one. Of course.

untitled short-short
Arthur/Eames, 160 words
Arthur on mistakes. Short little character piece, pretty great.

untitled
Arthur/Eames, 725 words
Arthur fixes Eames' tie. Obviously I can't resist. And the first paragraph is very interesting to me.

the question is not whether I treat you rudely, but whether you ever heard me treat anyone else better
Arthur/Eames, PG-13, pre-movie, ~8400 words
Ok, this is a story of Eames and Arthur's backstory. In which they met at Fort Bragg. Because Arthur is DELTA FORCE and Eames was SAS AND BASICALLY THIS IS WHERE I DISSOLVE INTO CAPSLOCK AND SHOO YOU OVER THERE BECAUSE UM DUH THIS IS RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS. And then it gets better.

If You're Just Playing Along, I Promise We'll Be Fine
Arthur/Eames, R, 2000 words
Porn. Drunken porn. In a bar. With at least one one-liner that made me seriously crack up.

The Day They Broke Arthur
This one is just crack. Arthur faints, people fuss, it's everyone/Arthur (except Yusuf, who appears to be sane, and Ariadne, who appears not to be), and seriously, did I mention the crack?

Towards Zero
Arthur/Eames, NC-17, pre-movie, 15,000 words
This Arthur rings very true for me, in addition to being a well-executed fic and laugh-out-loud funny from time to time. I mean, seriously: and if nothing else he's got too much dignity to crouch down and roll it over and over like he was auditioning for a bit part as a craps-playing gangster in West Side Story. It has an awesome relationship with Mal, it handles this world in a way that really, really works for me, there're some great moments of suitporn, and it has emotional depth. Plus it's hot. Go read it now.

This thread of the kinkmeme
It's Arthur/Eames, but it is specifically about Eames being smarter than Arthur thinks he is, which is nice - I see him as quite smart, and I don't see the general fanon that way at all. There are several (five or so?) ficlets here, and some are quite good.

Five Ties Arthur Can't Wear Anymore
Arthur/Eames, PG-13, 2000 words
Weird for me - I'm not in a mood to be into schmoopy A/E (I think I just read too many in a row, sigh), but this one was interesting enough to hook me anyway, and there were lines of Arthurs which I could hear in his voice and picture him saying, which is actually a huge statement from me because generally that's just not how my mind works. Plus, ties.

Five Times Eames Was (Shockingly) A Gentleman
Arthur/Eames, R, 2600 words
Kind of ditto the above. A few great Arthur moments, a lot of DRUNK Arthur, and an Eames who isn't just a two-dimensional perv.

tu es la belle et moi la bête
Arthur/Eames, R, post-movie, CRACK, 5000 words
When he wakes up Arthur’s already putting the PASIV device away and Eames kind of wants to hump his leg. It’s not exactly the first time he’s had the thought, so he doesn’t realize anything is wrong. Eames forges a dog. It sticks. Arthur is hapless, Cobb is merciless, and Ariadne clearly is a dog person. SO HILARIOUS I ACTUALLY INHALED FOOD FROM LAUGHING NOT ONCE BUT TWICE.

My Slumbering Heart
gen, Ariadne, Arthur, & Eames, pg, Victorian AU
This is WONDERFUL! It is just-- WONDERFUL! I want SO MUCH MORE in this verse. Good heavens, just-- a well-done Victorian AU of this. I LOVE IT A LOT OK.

Collecting Stolen Moments
Arthur/Ariadne/Eames, R, 1120 words
The morning after the threesome. Cute.

la petite mort (the little death machine)
Ariadne/Arthur, R, 1200 words
Orgasm as the kick. It's hot, ok?

Liminal Space
Ariadne/Arthur, NC-17, 2700 words
Ok, THIS? THis is hot as hell. This is dream!sex at it's--- GUH. Just go read it. I am signing up for this one like WHOA.

So I don't know if y'all read A Softer World, but I do, and these Inception takes on previous A Softer World strips are pretty brill. Several of them are also SO true to the movie. Like the one with Mal.

THIS! This is why this fandom is the best fandom, and it's also why I am being picky and weirdly wrongfooted in much of the fic. Apparently my projections onto these people are very specific, and not the most standard. Interesting idea, that. Makes me feel like I really should concentrate on putting them down on paper. Hm. Because these characters, this fandom, as Rorschach test kind of doesn't stop being fascinating, really.

fic recs, dream a little dream
