Solomon Asch (1950s): group/peer pressure study
Group of 6-8 participants (all except one were accomplices)
Asked to respond to some simple perceptual problems:
Asked which of three lines matched a standard line in length,
a. -----
b. ---------
c. -----
76% of the subjects went along with the group's false answer (letters "a" and "b" MATCH!!!) at least once.
only 5% did so when there were no accomplices.
