My impressions of a Game of Thrones, book 1.

Apr 27, 2012 13:01

I read the first book out loud to Meesto over many evenings. I read it out loud without having read it to myself first or having seen the TV show. My impressions were basically this:( Cut so no one accidentally gets spoiled. )

Definitely a lot of weird sex issues. Glad that the series magnifies it. I will read the books...

Glad that the series magnifies it. ....Eh? I'm not glad. Perhaps it becomes more clear in later books that Weird Sex Issues is indeed the main theme of the series, but from the perspective of a new reader/watcher, I don't see why playing up all the slightly repellent things in the book to make them lots more repellent in the TV show is glad-making.

Sorry, typed too fast - I meant that I'm glad it's the flaw of the TV series to magnify the weird sex, and therefore the book is more appealing :-)

I gotta say, I have never had the experience of 'the book is better' in quite this way.

I have to admit this series is my guilty, guilty pleasure. I have often thought while reading them "Omg what would N think? This is so misogynistic! But the world-building! The swords! The castles!"

I do think it's interesting how GRRM can start out by having you hate a character, then by book 4 you find yourself sympathizing with that character. HMMM.

Did you notice how when Theon pulled his dick out of that whore how his dick was all soft and dry, I don't think it works like that, Theon.

Hahahaha yes I noticed this and immediately pointed it out to my friend who was also watching the series.

Well, I seem to have just the mixed impression that you'd imagined. :)

Well. We'll see. I've heard rumours but I'm pretty sure I'll still enjoy some of these characters getting eaten by monsters.

re: Theon's not-near-serious-enough cock. Maybe they should have made him wear a shiny wet appliance. Stage makeup is so good these days.
