After a week and a half of severe illness, we put our cat to sleep this morning.
Meesto's story of her illness is here.
http://meesto.livejournal.com/tag/cat Lucy slept on my bed and on a chair next to me in the office and followed me around the garden and gave me mice.
When we lived in the busy city I would take her outside on the leash and she would come running to the door to have the leash put on her. We took her with us to New Zealand and then she got to be an indoor/outdoor kitty, which she loved. She endured the rabbits patiently and only smacked them when they got within four inches of her. She prefered to drink out of human water glasses or vases of flowers rather than cat bowls.
She was good friends with me and considered me a good buddy, but Meesto was her special human and she loved him desperately. She followed him around, would sleep inside his discarded sweaters, and always wanted to sit next to him on the couch. When he was working, she would often poke claws in his knee so he would pick her up and give her a cat hug. She liked to jam her face into the crook of his elbow.
Meesto has had other pets, but Lucy was the first cat who had ever chosen Meesto, the first pet he ever bonded with in such a deep way. We got her when she was three months old (the last kitten to be chosen) and in two weeks she would have been sixteen. She didn't want to go, she worked real hard at hiding the pain and hiding from the box, but her numbers said her kidneys weren't working anymore and we thought to spare her even more pain.
