http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/17/politics/17poll.html?hp&ex=1119067200&en=b35244a559fdfab9&ei=5094&partner=homepage The basic gist of the above story is that Bush's approval rating has dropped, Congress' approval rating has dropped further, Americans don't care that much about Social Security and don't like Bush's plan, and most Americans feel the Iraq War has been bungled. This should be great news, right? Probably less than a year until the 2006 Congressional elections get underway, and America is officially in a mood of discontent, one that begs to overthrow the currnt regime, shake things up and get some new blood in there. I should be jumping up in down in joy right now.
But you know what? I'm not. Because I have no faith whatsoever that the Democrats have any ability to turn this slow pitch softball into anything more than an out at first. One telling thing this article points out is that Americans "wish the Democrats would present an alternative for Social Security instead of just bashing Bush's plan." Will they? Probably not in this lifetime. I'm not sure what the DNC is up do these days, besides scrambling to find individual job security in the face of impending doom, as opposed to focusing on what would really save their party: being a viable alternative to the Republicans that more than 1% of Americans that live outside the Beltway or Manhattan find attractive. Let's face it: most Americans are ugly, stodgy, and more stupid than smart. They don't really like to think, but they like to feel like someone else is thinking for them, without that set-up being blatently obvious. Let's be real: the Democrats have put no energy whatsoever into recruiting and developing viable candidates from rural areas, or young candidates for that matter. The RNCC pours money into RnD on young people, and the Democrats pour their money into... Hillary Clinton? Ted Kennedy? I honestly have no idea what the DNC does with it's money. Bottom line: this is the best opportunity the Dems are gonna get to finally get some ground back, and all they're gonna do is sink in the mud and watch the gravy train pass them by, maybe this time for good.
