lost boys

they ran down to the water,
yellow plastic shovels tick-tacking
against blue plastic buckets
with sharp white handles.
shrieks and tans and
sprays of sand against their toes.

they ran down to the water,
digging furiously against the tide.
walls and mountains rising
in a checkerboard town
paved with shells and
sinking under the salty sun.

they ran down to the water,
and the water ran back at them.
it pushed over castles
it pulled down moats
it left kelp and
sand and a pale new start.

you can go now
