[movie] cirque du freak: the vampire's assistant

Mar 12, 2010 15:42

I'm deliberately mainlining YA, both as books and movies. This week's YA movie selection was the poorly-received Cirque du Freak, the movie adaptation of the Darren Shan book series.

This was sure a bizarre movie -- other than the obvious depictions of circus freaks -- the supporting cast are actually top-name actors: Ken Watanabe, Selma Hayek, Willem Dafoe. Maybe they were all just doing the producers/director a favor? Or maybe a paycheck's a paycheck, hey no problem with that.

(Biggest surprise was Patrick Fugit -- remember him from Almost Famous -- who was playing a Snake Boy. Talk about fall from grace.)

The movie itself was sort of predictable. Prior to this movie, my only exposure to the Darren Shan stories was through the manga. I'm not really sure why Darren's supposed to be an interesting character, 'cause he's quite bland. Even as a vampire. (Is this part of the boring white boy vampire conspiracy? 'Cause if it is, it's totally working).

I wouldn't recommend this, unless you're really bored like I was.

movies: bad movies, movies: united states
