Good Morning:Tatty and Anna

Aug 13, 2004 02:39

Tatty opened his eyes, there were strange noises around him, crying, talking, moving, banging of cooking pots, and at first he had forgotten where he was, a panic flashed through him, his heart racing, pounding in his ears. Tatty rolled over and came directly into contact with a warm body, he was ready to sit up and scream out, gasping instead as ( Read more... )

Anna awoke to the sound of the rocking chair creaking and daily noises in the mall that she was slowly getting used to. As she sat up in bed, she glanced over at her friend who was sat in the rocking chair. He looked okay this morning, calm and relaxed even, she was glad about that. She rubbed her eyes and tucked her hair behind her ear; she smiled sleepily at Tatty "good morning is everything alright?"

Tatty's hands grasped the arms of the rocking chair, though not too tightly, and he smiled as Anna started to come around. He hadn't meant to wake her, but he was secretly glad she was awake now. He nodded and slowly smiled to her question, he was greatly comforted just hearing her voice. "Sounds like breakfast," he told her simply, nodding at the doorway. He could see a bit down the hallway from here, out of his own doorway, a thought which made him nervous. He didn't like being alone, and though the building was full of people, Tatty still felt all alone in a room that was his very own.

A grin spread across Anna's face "breakfast! I'm really hungry" she paused for a moment, twisting her fingers around her rainbow coloured bracelets, she remembered the conversation she'd had with Tatty the day before, about his fears.

"Are you going to come to breakfast this morning, or would you like me to bring you something?" she asked as she moved along to the end of the bed, dangling her feet over the edge. Anna looked down at her legs; she smiled to herself realizing that she had slept in her clothes.

Tatty rocked a bit, letting the question hang in the air, it was almost as if he could see it there, turning around in a circle, are you coming to breakfast? He had to, he had already told himself today was his day, "Yes, I will come," he agreed, standing up suddenly. He buttoned a few buttons on his shirt that had come undone in the night, straightened his pants and checked his belt, turning to grab his shuttle pocket and button it onto his belt, tucking his shuttle, already preloaded with thread, into the pocket. He sat down on the floor and put his boots on, worn and dirty. Tatty was attached to the boots, Ryan had already brought him home a new pair once, but that was a fight he didn't want to think about right now ( ... )

Anna looked slightly surprised by Tatty's response, even after yesterday's conversation she still hadn't been sure that he would agree. She reached over, and dragged her pink and black shoes closer to her feet. After putting her socks straight, Anna gripped the first shoe with her hand to hold it still; she pushed her foot inside, and then did the same with the other.

Anna ran her fingers through her straight hair, "what?" she frowned at Tatty, before glancing over at her blue fairy wings, "oh my fairy wings" she smiled, "I don't know, do you think I should wear them?"

Tatty shrugged, not once but repeatedly, shaking his head as he did so, a nervous habit. "I dunno," he replied simply, looking down at them. They were pretty, Anna and Flower had found them in some closet, she'd told him that last night, "D-dinner wear," he supposed, shrugging again. He nervously fidgeted with his shuttle pocket, unbuttoning and rebuttoning it, rocking a bit on his feet. He wondered if Flower would wear her wings to breakfast, but he didn't suppose so, she wasn't one to stick with things for very long. It was quite different, living in the Mall, in the woods, they barely had anything, but here it almost felt like they had everything.

Tatty didn't know what to think of that, the children's home had been stocked full of things he'd never had in his home, but that didn't make it any more enjoyable to live in. He began to wonder if the fear and panic would hit him this morning if a large group came to breakfast. He hoped not, he didn't want to be called "freak" or "weirdo" or "spaz" by a group that was supposed to be ( ... )

"Yes, you're right, dinner wear" Anna smiled. Anna knew that Tatty was nervous, she could tell by the expression on his face. She had hoped their long conversation yesterday would have made things better for him, but now she wasn't so sure, "you know... it's just breakfast and I'll be with you. So shall we go?" she asked nodding her head in the direction of the doorway.

Tatty nodded, he knew she'd be there, that was probably the only thing keeping him from an all out panic attack, Anna would be there, and probably Ryan, most likely Kerry, and Tatty would be just fine. Tatty motioned out of the door way and followed Anna out but quickly caught up with her, his head down. He was too afraid to look around, but he was far more curious than afraid not to look. Tatty looked up, keeping his head down, and scanned the area they were headed for. He'd only caught a small glimpse of the area when they'd arrived yesterday and he'd been shown to his room, and at first glance it looked like a very small area. He could see now that it was much larger, and from the sounds and smells he could tell that there were more rooms. So maybe it wouldn't be so bad, the large group of people who lived here would be spread out when eating, and maybe they wouldn't care to talk to Tatty too much. At least, he could hope.

Anna walked quickly along, Tatty trailing behind her. Anna looked in the rooms as she walked along towards the cafe, passing Gel's room she noticed two people in there, she didn't recognize either of them. As Anna walked she glanced back at Tatty, she could see how nervous and afraid he was, she stopped, hoping it would make a difference she held out her hand.

Tatty looked down at the hand beside him, and he nervously tucked his into hers, a comfort to hold, her soft hand against his calloused fingers. She was loved, like a big sister, something about her reminded him of his Mother, and though that sometimes made him sad to remember, mad that she was gone, it also helped calm him more than Anna could probably ever know. Tatty watched as Willow raced up the stairs then started to come towards them, his grip on Anna's hand a bit tighter. He liked Willow, she was quiet and calm, and even seeing the excitement in her face made his heart leap a little. Maybe living here wouldn't be so bad.

Willow came upstairs and turned the corner around the railing, letting go just before the broken railing and rushing up to Tatty and Anna, though slowing her pace so she didn't rush at him and scare him. "Good morning," she greeted cheerfully, glad to see her best friend too. "We made friends with the little girl, Brady," she announced happily, "She's really cute, and we tried to make friends with Mouse but I think she's still in a bad mood or something," she said with a shrug. "I'm starved, aren't you?" Willow grinned widely and turned around, walking with them towards the Cafe on the opposite side of Anna from Tatty.

"That's great" Anna smiled at Willow, "I'm sure Mouse will come around eventually... I'm starved too I wonder what we're having". As they approached the cafe, Anna gently squeezed Tatty's hand. "We'll go sit in the extra cafe it will be quieter in there".

Tatty listened to Willow, he didn't have faces for these names, Brady didn't sound menacing, and she said she was "the little girl", nevermind that she was cute. Tatty didn't have a lot of experience with very little girls, at the childrens home he'd been in the wing with the boys and they had just been mean to Tatty. He remembered the little boys, crying and diapers, but he never helped with that or dealt with them. He wasn't really sure how he'd feel about that, but he wasn't about to volunteer to help. Tatty didn't know anything about the extra cafe but he liked the sound of it being quieter. He nodded his head in agreement, nervously pulling his hand out of Anna's and crossing his arms over his chest, drying his sweaty palms on his shirt.
