Summary: Some people are celebrating Sheik’s birthday whether he likes it or not.

When Zack found out about Sheik’s birthday (or Birthday’s Birthday, as he’s been calling it), he scrambled to find something to share with him. His labors brought little: some soup from Aaron’s shop, some more wood for the fire, and nothing else. Guilt swallowed him like a hungry beast as he walked into the house with his arms void of gifts that could be something so Sheik, and as he kicked off his boots at the door, he wondered what he could do. Link had offered to share his present, but he didn’t want to take credit for what he hadn’t contributed.
He wanted something all his own. He wanted something…special.
Fingers tapped at the arm of the chair he fell into, errant and slow. What to give him? The Sheikah had been there for him since he arrived, helping him, standing beside him, forgiving him for all his wrongdoings and bad social etiquette. He had protected him from nightmare monsters and all else, had foregone sleep just so that he could. And what had he asked for in the end?
Nothing.
Zack sighed for a moment, before closing his eyes and smiling. He didn’t have much, just a materia and a sword, a few earrings in his ears and-
His fingers slid into his shirt, tugging on the beaded metal chain as his dogtags emerged and settled against his chest. Embossed metal showed his name, his birth date, his SOLDIER number, forever branded in silver tones, and it took a moment before he could pull them over his head and hold them in his hands. It was all he had, this symbol of his job, his aspirations, his dreams, and it was special to him.
He hoped it would be special to Sheik, too.
Fisting them in his hand until the edges bit into the creases of his palms, he waited. If Sheik took too long, he might just eat the soup he brought from Aaron’s before he got there. He was starving.
