Part 2

Grace continued to press her head against Steve's chest as she pointed to her head first and then to her throat. Suddenly she began to cough uncontrollably and her throat started to hurt even more. The pain forced her to crawl further into Steve's lap as she let out a painful cry.

Lifting her head slightly, Steve cupped her chin with his hand and forced her to look at him. "Can you open your mouth for me sweetie?" He waited for her to do as she was told and watched as she opened her mouth to reveal the back of her throat. Steve let out soft, remorseful sigh when he saw her tonsils were red and swollen. He knew immediately that Grace was suffering from tonsillitis and would need medical attention.

"Grace, I think it would be best if I took you to the hospital," he stated standing up. He quickly found his shoes and slipped them on, all the while keeping Grace secure in his arms.

"I don't want to go," she cried, shaking her head and trying to jump out of Steve's arms.

Steve let out a heavy sigh as he made his way to Grace's room to grab her shoes as well so they could leave. He wasn't used to taking care of a sick child and a part of him was slightly worried that he was going about it all wrong but he needed to do his best for Danny. "I know you don't sweetie but we have to. The doctor will help you feel better and you want to feel better don't you."

"I want Danno."

'Me too,' thought Steve as he found a pair of flip flops for Grace to wear. "Danny's away right now helping put a very bad man away for a long time but you have my word that I will call him as soon as I can."

Grace looked at him, tears streaming down her face at the pain she was feeling and the thought of going to the hospital without Danny. She wanted her father there with her, holding her hand, and telling her everything was going to be okay. But he wasn't there, Steve was and she trusted him to keep her safe. "You promise," she asked, voice cracking slightly.

Steve shook his head adamantly. "I do but until then you have to trust me and know that I will be by your side the entire time."

"Okay."

"That's my sweet girl," smiled Steve, slipping the flip flops on Grace's feet before picking her up again. Cradling her in his arms, he made his way downstairs, grabbed his keys from the bowl, and quickly made his way to the car. "Don't worry sweetheart. Everything is going to be okay," he whispered encouragingly in her ear as he placed her in the car and buckled her seatbelt. "I promise."

Now all he had to do was believe that everything would be okay. That and get Danny back in Hawaii as quickly as possible. For Grace's sake and his.

Part Three cancer22 May 23 2012, 06:30:54 UTC
A couple of hours later Steve was back at home tucking a sleeping Grace into bed and placing a kiss on her forehead. Quietly, he left the room and walked to his own bedroom where he immediately flopped down on his bed, letting out a relieved sigh as he did so. After waiting nearly an hour to see a doctor and sitting through a slew of test, it was revealed that Grace did not have tonsillitis. Instead, the doctor informed him that Grace was more than likely coming down with a cold and didn't really need to come to the hospital for treatment. Still, she gave him a prescription for cold medicine and released the little girl back into his car. When Steve had heard the news he was relieved that everything was fine and slightly embarrassed.

He was just about to fall asleep when his cell phone suddenly began to ring. Steve knew it was Danny by the ringtone and a smile spread wide across his face as he answered. "Hey Danno."

"I just got your message babe," replied Danny, voice crackling with worry. "What's wrong with Grace?"

"Relax Danny everything's fine," Steve stated calmly. "I just overreacted a bit that's all."

Danny let out a growl as he ran his fingers violently through his hair. "Overreacted a bit, Steve what the hell. The judge finally granted a recess and I check my messages only to have missed a call from you stating that you were in the process of taking my daughter to the hospital and you tell me to relax. No way, not going to fly Rambo so tell me what's going on," he finished with heavy breath.

Steve/Danny; Grace gets sick and Steve has to take care of her. Conclusion cancer22 May 23 2012, 06:33:03 UTC
Clearing his throat, Steve sat up on the bed and let out a sigh. "Okay the truth is Grace woke me up a few hours ago with a fever and complaining of a headache and a sore throat. Upon inspecting her throat, I saw that it was red and swollen, and came to the conclussion that she was suffering from tonsillitis." Pausing for a second to let everything soak in for Danny, he let out another sigh before continuing. "I then concluded that it would probably be best if I took her to the hospital for further treatment by a medical professional."

"Why am I sensing a but here?" voice calmer than before.

"Because after the doctor finished with the exam he informed me that Grace was simply coming down with a cold," finished Steve softly and silently hoping that Danny didn' hear the embarassment in his voice.

"A cold," repeated Danny after a moment of silence.

"A very bad cold Danny. She could be out of school for the rest of the week." He waited quietly, thinking that Danny was gearing up to yell at him for not telling him that sooner. What he got, however, was something he didn't expect. "Wait a second," replied Steve confused. "Are you laughing at me?"

Danny continued to laugh into the phone at Steve. "You," he began after he had calmed down. "Steven, are one of the smartest people that I know. Can probably kill a man with a stick of chewing gum and a paperclip and yet, you don't recognize the symptoms of a cold. All that milarty training gone to waste," teased Danny.

"Whatever Danny," growled Steve as he lied back down across the bed and listened to Danny continue to laugh at him. If he wasn't so upset with himself for jumping to conclusions he probably would have joined in on the laughter.

"Oh calm down you big baby," replied Danny, no longer laughing but smiling instead. "I was once in your shoes," he informed Steve as he thought aout the first time he had taken Grace to the doctor, thinker she was sicker than she actually was. "I may have overreacting when Grace got sick for the first time. The doctor informed me that it was nothing but a cough but I was relentless, calling him all the time and asking questions. It got so bad that he actually stopped taking my calls and Rachel was mad as hell because we had to find another pediatrician."

That caused Steve to chuckle slightly. "Jesus Danny," sighed Steve, rubbing his hand over his face. "I thought it was serious. I mean...not that it wasn't, she's sick after all but...how did you stop driving yourself crazy with worry."

Danny let out a sigh of his own followed by a shrug. "Well Steven you have to learn that sometimes a cough is just a cough. No more, no less. It takes time but you'll learn soon enough. While I'm glad that my baby girl is okay, I can't help but feel good that your reacted the way that you did. It means a lot to me that you

"It means a lot to me that you trust me with Grace when both you and Rachel are not around."

"You're my partner Steve," stated Danny honestly. "If I can't trust you with my most prized possessions than who can I trust."

"I trust you too."

"I know you do."

They didn't say anything, letting the silence overcome them as they thought about everything that was happening. Glancing at the clock Steve realized that it was almost eight o'clock am Pacific time and the recess would be over soon. "I should probably let you go now, let you grab somethin to eat before you have to go back inside the court room."

"Yeah," whispered Danny. "You should."

"I love you Danno."

"I love you too you giant goof," smirked Danny happily. "Now I suggest you get some rest because while I love my daughter immensely she is a nightmare when she gets sick. You're going to need all the sleep you can get."

Steve smiled as he hung up the phone, happy that everything had turned out to be okay. He couldn't really ask for anything more than that.

Oh, yay! This was a lovely continuation of the story! (Also, thank you so much for participating in the meme :D) Poor Grace, and oh, I love that Steve overreacted so much to her being sick! He's learning how to be a parent--constant worry for your child ;) And a lot of overreaction, too! Love his conversation with Danny in the end--they're so perfect for each other. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

I'm glad that you liked it. I kinda read it wrong about the no hospitalization and knew I couldn't leave it the way it was. I was suprised I was able to actually participate in something like this. I'm usually not very good at sitting down and writing out of my head in a short time span. It gives me hope for the future.
