When I posted about Dad's hip replacement and subsequent physical therapy, there was much surprise (from me as well). Here's the scoop:
The day of his surgery, they got him out of bed to sit in a chair for dinner. He made it about 10 minutes before he got shaky, a holdover from the anesthesia. The PT the next day consisted of giving him exercises that he'll do for several weeks, to regain full use of the joint. The first couple of days, he needed a sheet (looped around his leg, both ends in his hands) to help him do them. He walked as far as the door of his room the second day, and further down the hall the next. So yes, they had him using right away, but it wasn't as drastic as I'd first pictured.
When we visited my parents at home yesterday, and Dad met us at the door, with a walker. It's amazing to me how well he's getting around already!
