Today's grand rounds: neurologist talked about dementia & Alzheimer's

Today in grand rounds, a UCSF MD/PhD neurologist talked to us about dementia and Alzheimer's disease---causes, diagnoses, and latest treatments. Fascinating! He said the 4 main acetylcholinesterases (like donepezil) basically slow down the start of Alzheimer's by the same amount---"despite what the drug sales reps may tell you." Unfortunately, they can only delay---not stop---the decline of our brains.

He also said that having Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) usually meant that you would get Alzheimer's eventually. We still can't do that much about Alzheimer's and need to diagnose it YEARS earlier. By the time we diagnose it, the patient's brain has usually developed those beta amyloid plaques characteristic of the disease. :(
