Not really. Since I never grew up, let me you fill in with what I know off the top of my head.
In 2012, YouTube was filled with parodies of Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe and PSY's Gangnam Style, the latter song and video from a South Korean rapper that went waaaaay viral across the world. It topped the music charts in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, every country in Europe that keeps Billboard charts, but only could manage #2 in the U.S. (Thank or blame Maroon 5.) So that's why the YouTube Rewind video went that direction.
Outisde of PSY, Felicia Day, and Walk Off The Earth, most of the rest of the "stars" of the video are people who kave popular video blogs on YouTube. Unless you are subscribers to those video blogs, you really shouldn't know who they are.
As for the video itself:
The band Walk Off The Earth does neat cover videos based on requests of its fans. Their video for Goyte's "Somebody That I Used To Know" had the five members of the band huddled around a single long-neck guitar, using the parts of the guitar to simulate the other instruments. That video was just as good as Goyte's actual video for the song.
The guy who rips away the guitar is none other than PSY, the rapper behind "Gangnam Style" and its video, which became the first video in YouTube history to collect more than a billion views.
The first part of the video parodies the "Gangnam Style" video. AlphaCat, the guy dancing in the stables, does Barack Obama parody videos. I have no idea why the zebra is there.
In the elevator scene, RealGrace is dressed as Katniss from "The Hunger Games", while KassemG is either Michael Phelps or Ryan Lochte, gold medal winning U.S. swimmers at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Outside of parodying the garage dance-off scene from "Gangnam Syle", I have no clue what the four brightly colored dancers - De Storm, Mystery Guitar Man, Dave Days, and PyroBooby - do on YouTube.
The duo behind Barely Political are doing a parody of a cover video of Karmen's "Look at me now" single. They also show up on the bus later on in the video.
Real Annoying Orange has been making YouTube vdieos now for about three years, and they have a definite following on YouTube. Their "Gangnam Style" parody video this year was "Orange Nya Nya Style".
The big dance scene that follows has Freddie W and friend dressed us as Master Chief from the Halo computer game (Halo 4 came out in late fall this year and sold well). Corridor Digital and the ladies represent the popular Minecraft computer game. I still have no idea why the zebra is there, or if it has anything to do with Rhett and Link.
The little robot represents the Curiosity Rover that landed on Mars in August. There was a funny video of the control team going crazy when the Rover landed on the surface safely, and the guys from Smosh are parodying that. (We also got Mohawk Guy from that same video.)
So why does the Rover blow up in the video? One of the most popular "Gangnam Style" parodies on YouTube was a animated version of the video done in the Minecraft computer game. At the end of the video, the zombie creeper, which substitutes for the red-haired Hyuna from the original video, blows up and takes out the dancers. Here, the rover blows up, and the explosion is littered with the block-like rocks that are the staple of the MineCraft game.
