I figured out what was making Brian sick before the Dr's did.
(does the happy I iz so smart wiggle!)
To sum it up, last night (Monday) the surgical resident comes in and talks to Brian and I about 5pmish wanted to know how he felt, if he felt good enough to go, had he been vomiting, how were the dilaudid pills working, you know the usual, lets get you out of here drill. The dilaudid question was very specific as he can't go home until he can take oral pain medication. Whether it's pills or elixir's they don't care, he just can't go home on pain killer injections!
The nurse comes in while we're talking and is bringing him his new ringers lactate solution and his vitamin drip solution and his first oral dilaudid pill (in prepping him to be released) and his metformin, The dilaudid pill is really very tiny and it's no issue taking it. The metformin on the other hand, is HUGE and he can only swallow things the size of an m&m or smaller (not the ones w/nuts) so just as we did on friday and sat and every other time we fed it to him after the surgery, it's been cut into pieces, excluding sunday , but I'll get to that in a minute, he works his way through taking the pills and within 45 minutes he's tossing his cookies....again. So, the light bulb goes off over my head as I think what did he have just now, and what happened the other nights, and the common denominator is metformin, broken up, except for sunday when the nurse crushed all his meds into powder and mixed them with applesauce. oh la la!!!!! I iz smart. So i scooted down to the nurses desk and politely asked to speak to the surgeon, and the nice lady introduces herself to me as the surgeon resident and the one we just spoke to got to go home. So I go through my whole spiel and she just nods her head and says she'll follow up with dr kole and I think your just patronizing me. But is the only possible thing that it could be. They decided to keep him overnight as he just started his vomiting again and they have to get that under control. I had to work today or I wouldn't have gotten paid for the holiday or my scheduled time off on weds. Brian tells me that the surgeon resident that he saw this morning told him he should not even be on metformin and not to take it. Lo and behold, he doesn't get sick tuesday morning. Surprise, surprise, surprise.
So he's home again, feeling tired and sore and achy but happy to be home.
Maybe I should go to med school?
