Spelling Nazi and the Opera

Feb 27, 2007 07:57

So I got this email a few days ago. It's from this guy who saw my BigMuscle profile and thought I looked really hot. He sent along some photos of himself and, you know what? He's pretty hot too. Big rugby guy, a little goatee, a few tattoos, aggressive top man, mid-thirties with really big arms... yeah, I can handle that. He said he wanted to meet ( Read more... )

ok
this is so funny
i didn't read this until AFTER I posted a poll referring to the spelling of some words...and after I read another journal entry (kriserin about receiving a letter from a man who was maybe trying to flirt, but it was so badly written and riddled with typos and misspellings that she couldn't stand it..AND after a quick discussion about labor vs labour with a spelling snob....all in the last two hours.

What's the opera? Is your friend singing a lead role? I hope you enjoy it--opera is so much fun!

And I'm with you on spelling. I know there are lots of intelligent people who missed out on the spelling gene, but I think we call got the spell check gene.

The opera is Adriadne Auf Naxos. I'm not sure which role he's playing, but I'm pretty sure it'll be either the lead or almost-lead... he's been in quite a bit and he's apparently quite good.

Ugh, you should have seen the last email! I'm not gonna post it or anything -- that would be way too rude and a breach of his privacy -- but it was really scary. Just a handful of words spelled legibly.

I just looked it up online--looks like a splendid cast! You'll like the way it makes fun of opera conventions, like the temperamental prima donna. You did read the story, didn't you? It's good to be prepared.

Yup, he sent me the synopsis, so I should be able to follow the story as I see it. It seems like a pretty light one, so I shouldn't be overly bogged down.

Good spelling <> intelligence.

If I am a spelling Nazi, does that make people who can't spell, spelling Jews?

Still, I think a lack of care in spelling (or at least in using the spell checker) does indicate some lack of consideration for the reader. I find it a struggle to read messages that are spelled atrociously.

Come to think of it, though, if I had to expend the amount of energy that bad spellers must have to expend to correct my own spelling, I'm not sure I would bother. I'd probably hang out online with other bad spellers. There's gotta be some hot ones out there.

Well this bad speller is definitely a hot one, so I'll overlook the atrocious spelling for now. And hey, maybe he'll be able to maintain the conversation long enough for me to down a beer and drag him back to my place. And like you said, spelling and intelligence are not necessarily intertwined.

I just hope the lack of consideration for his reader doesn't translate to a lack of consideration for his bottom... I wanna enjoy this. What am I saying? I'll make sure I do. :)

This is funny...I'm the same way about spelling, or even poor typing/proofreading skills. However, I know a few people who spell pretty badly, but are actually intelligent people. He was probably just so excited that he typed really fast and didn't proofread.
You know you want him, regardless...

Yeah, I'll try to view it as a positive... as in I work him up so badly he can barely think straight. And I totally want him regardless of his spelling. The guy's a stud!

LOL! When I first read his latest email, I was almost starting to think that. But when it comes right down to it, his spelling ability has nothing to do with what we'll be doing that day. And yes, he is hot.
